ECHOtrade seminar in SD and NY

I've been to two ECHOtrade seminars and they were worthwhile. Some of the strategies apply only to listed stocks because they take advantage of some of the rules of the exchange. But there are other strategies that apply equally well to nasdaq stocks. The perception that Echo only encourages...

    Spreads and baskets in Qcharts

I used FirstAlert for creating baskets. Mostly it was to track a sector that didn't have an exchange traded index, such as homebuilders or auto parts makers. You could make them price or capitalization weighted. For spreads, I need to be able to include a ratio or cash component, like you...

    Spreads and baskets in Qcharts

I just installed Qcharts 4.1 and from the help file, it doesn't seem that you can do spread charts or baskets. Is this true, or is there a way to do it that isn't covered in the help file? Seems like a pretty basic feature of a charting package. Thanks, Corey

    Questions from a non-trader

tntneo is right. It is common for professional traders making well into 6 figure incomes to sweep their account to $50k at the end of each month. They might make 20-50% on that money for the month and make a phenomenal return on their "investment" by year end, but they don't think in those...

    Questions from a non-trader

Cohiba, You sound like you might benefit from trading in an office setting with a professional firm. I was in your situation not long ago and this is what I did and it has benefitted me greatly. I had some trading experience, but decided to do this fulltime. I had enough money saved up to...

How tough to Short a few thousand?

I think what Don is saying is that if you can get a 'natural short' off in size on one print, there is probably some buying pressure and the position could be about to go against you. If the stock is quite liquid, you should have no problem hitting bids with bullets for the size you are talking...

    Prop's for NON U.S. citizens

What country are you in? If it's anywhere other than Canada, you probably won't have a problem. The Canadian banks' lock on the brokerage industry is putting up huge roadblocks, even to professional firms/LLC's. There are workarounds though.

    nyse buy and sell imbalances

Are you sure about 3000 share minimum? I've sent MOC orders for as little as a few hundred shares playing S&P additions. The software we use at Echotrade has MOC as one of the time in force selections. Must be in by 3:40 though, and can't be cancelled.

To hedge or not to hedge?

Look at how IBM closed on Friday. I got long the stock when it made a new high, then it started to drop and went straight to it's low for the day without letup. IBM can make large moves very quickly and when I trade it, I know I need a wide stop. But when it really started to crater and the...

    Don's Openings Pt. 2

I brought it up in the other thread, but am still trying to figure out the best way to account for the stock's beta when determining the prices for my orders. Is it best to make the beta adjustment to the envelope or the fair value of the stock? I've changed my order spreadsheet to adjust...

Money Management - Percentage Risk Question

The 1-2% risk you hear so often is refering to your account size and how much of that total you are willing to lose if you are stopped out on the trade. If you have a $100,000 account and risk 1% on a trade, you would be down $1000 if you are stopped out. This is how you determine the proper...

stops just outside day highs and lows

I sometimes use buy stops to enter long positions just above the day's high. If I'm short a stock and the bid is below the current day's low I'll actually try to hit the bid (using bullets), and get the stock to print a new low, hopefully triggering stops or getting sellers to move down. Corey

    VIX??????

I've been thinking the same thing for the last two weeks. The low volatility and low options premiums means you can get exposure to whatever move is coming fairly cheaply. I've been trying to put together a strategy to profit from this- would anybody like to carry this discussion down that...

User Names On Elitetrader (a fun thread)

    Day trading in Canada

You call those rates fair? A low volume trader is paying several thousand dollars a month more in commissions than a penny/share, no ticket charge outfit. If you do a couple million a month, it 10's of thousands of dollars. Does Questrade not allow their traders access to outside...

    Day trading in Canada

I'm a Canadian daytrader who recently switched to trading full time for a living. I was stuck at TD Waterhouse for years, paying thier outrageous commissions when I traded less frequently. To be honest, I don't know how anyone could trade actively with an outfit like that and stay in business...
