I certainly haven't made any correct calls so far in this run. You've shown considerable patience and stuck with a winner -- it's what everyone here aspires to do. Great job. It looks there's still a little room before you hit the 200-week, 100-day, and 200-day MAs in the mid-330s (at least...

    short dividends

According to Robert Green, who is citing IRS Publication 550, dividends paid to the owner on a short open less than 46 days is considered an adjustment to your cost basis on the position. If the short is open 46 days or longer then it's considered an interest expense.

    Anyone use IB with QT?

Hi, Kastro. I think you mentioned on another thread that you don't like Oanda's charts. What else would you like to see on them? Regards,

    Anyone use IB with QT?

Jerry (if you're reading this post), do the historical data providers for QT (Prophet, BigCharts) provide forex data? I've tried to do a symbol search for currency pairs on both with no luck.

The RT feed is fine; the backfill could be a lot better though.

    Have a tax question...please help...

Are you saying that a) the transactions are not listed individually on your 1099, or... b) that the profit and loss dollar amount of those trades is not included in the dollar amount for aggregate futures profit/loss? Who is your broker?

    Have a tax question...please help...

You're correct on number 1; I can't envision a realistic case where one would want to do that, unless you took a whopper loss in January that you know you could never turn into a net gain (but then you've got bigger problems than taxes at that point). I was just providing the only rationale as...

    Have a tax question...please help...

For example, if you knew or estimated by April 15 of this year that you would end up with a net loss on your commodity trading (including forex, broad-based indices, options on futures, etc.), it would be advantageous to make the IRC 475 MTM election for commodities. You would give up 60/40 tax...

    Maxtor Drive Died

Consider setting up a RAID 1 array with two drives. This gives you 100 percent redundancy. If one drive fails you just rebuild a new one from the remaining drive. Many newer motherboards support this configuration without an additional RAID controller. If you do need a RAID controller, I've...

    Have a tax question...please help...

Excellent advice. Trading is a business, and it's important to understand what you're obligated to pay, as well as when you can carry back losses, what deductions you're entitled to, and how to structure your business to maximize tax savings for health insurance, retirement, etc. I think my...

    Have a tax question...please help...

Screw that guy! He should be looking through documentation on the correct way to report those trades. Attached is the federal form to request an extension (it's granted automatically). You'll have to check with you state as to how it handles extensions. And remember that it's only an...

    Have a tax question...please help...

Is this person a CPA or just an accountant? A CPA should definitely know better. If he doesn't know how to report those trades correctly, then also he might not know how they should be taxed (i.e., 60 percent long-term capital gains / 40 percent short-term). Assuming you haven't made the...

Living on a boat and avoiding taxes

Do you think it's just a matter of time until the US bullies nearly all of the reputable banks (reputable from the perspective of an account holder, not the IRS) into participating in its patriot games?

I think I would be unhappy to put on a position in the after-hours market without having access to the pit. How well are your stops executed in the pit? Are you still in for three contracts? Fortunately, it looks like that harami from Friday didn't pan out to a retracement. There looks to...
