people are trading for a living?????

Sturgeon's Law "Ninety percent of everything is crap". Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably...

    Keeping it Simple

The example cited was one of pure capitalism, assumedly where everyone has an equal opportunity to charge for passage. Obviously if that opportunity is restricted, so that only one road may charge, there will be the abuses that come with monopoly.

    Keeping it Simple

Ahh... the delightful combination of academic elitism and idealistic socialism... I assume someone of your educational prominence has read Moore's Utopia? Nearly 500 years after its publication, we seem no closer, despite the intensive efforts of millions of socialists and the misery of...

    Keeping it Simple

or, maybe, neighboring landowners in a truly capitalist system like that would start competing with each other for traffic, having price wars, making travel more convenient, and providing the best possible road surface over the land to attract more customers. :)

    that's American ...

That is not the reason for US withdrawl. "The US and Israel walked out of the conference earlier in the week in protest against Arab attempts to adopt a resolution equating Zionism - the political movement supporting the existence of a Jewish state - with racism."...

$116 Trillion dollar lawsuit against terrorists

:) try as I might to stay away from the damned thing, I admit I can't resist political/talking-head shows -- if it were up to me McLaughlin and Meet the Press would be nightly.... btw, I'm not advocating that IRA/Boston argument - just thought it was a different way of looking at the...

    Who is the real editor

I certainly support closing threads that are abusive, slanderous, derogatory, etc. (with regard to anyone, sponsor or not) -- but when a mod starts saying things like "this thread has little value" it's another story... However, all in all I'd say the site is very well managed.

$116 Trillion dollar lawsuit against terrorists

I heard an interesting comment last night: the IRA bombed and terrorized London for 30 years (rightly or wrongly - no opinion on a justification for that struggle), and killed 4,000+ British citizens. Evidently much of the IRA's funding came from Irish groups in the U.S. -- does that give the...

    CEO signoff

I'm not a corporate law expert but something to consider here is personal liability of the executives. There are some instances when personal liability can attach, for example during the SEC registration process, with regard to promoting an improperly registered offering, etc. I don't know...

Maybe something was lost in the translation

Do you mean like "Sodom" as in "Sodom and Gomorrah" and "sodomize"? That would make sense -- being given the name of your arch-enemy's most notoriously sinful place would definitely be quite an insult... interesting.

    Freedom of Speech

The First Amendment only restricts STATE action (the Fed. Gov't and later extended to the states) -- it does not apply to individuals. So while legislators and cops are (theoretically) prohibited from censoring peaceful speech, a business owner can limit speech as a condition of employment...

    Freedom of Speech

The First Amendment was written to protect unpopular speech -- speech everyone agrees with doesn't need protection. IMO, you protect your own freedom to say what you want only by giving someone else the freedom to offend you. Granted the guy is crass and way off topic in a stock chat, and...

Greenspan Knighted - but we can't call him "Sir" ?

The entire subject of official titles is asinine - you can even buy them online now: http://www.nobletitles.com/ I love this line: "Become a genuine Lord, Lady, Baron, Viscount ... make your dreams come true in this lifetime, not the next!"
