    OANDA shutting down on news

I downloaded the tick data from Dukascopy's site (available for free) into excel, and made an excel chart. The chart type is "lines on 2 axes." I took out the connecting lines for the bid/ask points for clarity.

    OANDA shutting down on news

This is the feed from Dukascopy during last week's NFP report. Note how the spread blew out to over 20 pips follwing the announcement. Oanda's spread was about 10 pips. ECN's lose liquidity on news events as well. I am disappointed at Oanda's server crash on Friday, though. Not a good sign.

Heating oil and RBOB futures are both rolling today - the crack spreaders have to adjust their positions. (Based on a short Reuters article)

    What Analytics Environment?

If you work with daily charts, the best backtester is Tradingblox. It's not as good with intraday, as you have to finesse the data to fit the program.

    interactive-brokers real-time liquidation madness

Buffett's counterparties are allowing his positions to go underwater, to the point where mere mortals would have been "asked" to put up more collateral or liquidated. European options won't get exercised on you, but they still trade, and brokers can and will subject them to margin calls.

    FXCM going public

Saw this on FT's Alphaville blog: http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2010/11/15/405106/inside-an-fx-ipo/#comments Interesting to see audited financial statements from a forex broker. Looks like they make pretty good money. I also chuckled at FXCM's furious backpedaling over their former...

    Futures Questions from a newbie!

There are no interest charges, since the broker is not lending you the money. The "margin" is techincally a performance bond, which could be thought of as a deposit with the exchange to cover a day's losses. If the position goes against you, you need to add to your "deposit", or the broker...

    Gain Capital and market orders

Dukascopy and Alpari both claim to be ECN brokers, so you can look into those guys. Note that you also pay a commission on top of the spread with ECNs, but you aren't (usually) trading against the broker. As far as IB having bad charts...most people run a 3rd party charting app on top of...

    CL Redux

The 2:10-2:15 bar looked like a pile driver - ker-CHUNK, ker-CHUNK. Price seemed to move in 10-tick increments.

    CL Redux

I would add that the election results could move the dollar/S&P index after hours, which may carry over into the next day's trading. Since CL has shown some correlation of late, it may be worth keeping an eye on.

    Books on pyramiding

The "Official Turtle Trading Rules" (easily found with a bit of googling) has pyramiding rules built in. The forums at tradingblox.com has extensive discussions of pyramiding. (I am not affiliated with tradingblox, other than as a member of the forum.)

The forum at tradingblox.com has a VERY in-depth discussion of turtle/trend-following techniques. No detail is too small.

    Admittedly, R is very cool.

You can do this in excel. When you "activate" the regression line in the chart, you can check the "show formula" box in the menu. You have to manually type it into the spreadsheet to use it, though.
