    are we in a recession?

Why? Does it follow that as dollar depreciates against other currencies, suddenly the world demand for US exports explode and US demands for chinese goods drop to nothing? Why would unemployment spike?

I know - I meant that it was very odd having vaguely tex mex food in the middle of the russian far east. Are you still there? I imagine not.

    are we in a recession?

Or... demand does in fact pick up especially as asia becomes less competitive; the 'portfolio channel' works and we are back to pretty okay in a few years. Just saying that there are possibilities other than the end of the known-world scenario.

For work. I was only there for two days. Eat at 'the steak house'... it was odd.

Wow, lucky guess on my part. As luck would have it, I've been to Magadan. Did they ever get around to getting those sunk ships out of the water?

    Nanex Video Interview

I really don't understand these guys (granted, I thought about all of 5 minutes). Why is a firm specializing in high frequency data and data delivery foaming at the mouth about HFT all the time?

Is the way central banks view inflation simply wrong?

So, since it agrees with your view, it's not fiction now? :) I like how you think. For what its worth, I quoted you verbatim that you claim the Fed is denying what they are doing. If you are saying that I'm supporting the Fed or QE, please quote me or stop putting words in my mouth (I'll be...

Is the way central banks view inflation simply wrong?

Okay. We clearly have no basis to continue this conversation since you can just selectively reject any authority on the basis your own emotional judgement. You win the internet.

Completely understand why HFT must exist

Here's the part where I disagree - I don't believe HFT has any persistent effect on value; Here's my argument: So company A has a 'real value'. We don't know what it is: a momentum investor sees its value differently from a value investor, who sees it differently from a market maker. The idea...

What happened to that JPM thread

Ur... Joe - maybe you care to close this thread? It started with me trying to find out what happened to a thread. It's now just colonial_dr guy harassing me and making unfounded accusations.

What happened to that JPM thread

Um... you are the one who started trolling just now about it; This whole thing has been forgotten for sometime. This post is weeks old. I'm posting in reply to the lies you just concocted. If you don't care, why did you bother making up a bunch of lies about it. Lies that are easily...

Completely understand why HFT must exist

I disagree with both points. In the first instance, the sole existence of a government bond market is that... governments issue bonds. It doesn't exist without government 'intervention'. There's no value to discover where the market is willing to lend to government? Tell that to Italy or Spain...

What happened to that JPM thread

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. In fact, why don't we drag it out and let everyone see. It's interesting that your posting arises almost to being libel (well, it's not, since this is all anonymous and ultimately, who cares). If Joe cares to bring back that thread, we can all see how much...

Completely understand why HFT must exist

This has nothing to do with what I was talking about. "Pure price discovery for me is about the interaction of buyers and sellers without the government stepping in and manipulating prices" is purely a definition made up by you, for you. It's has little relation with what everyone else...

Completely understand why HFT must exist

Why? Stock markets and futures markets are still pretty damn good places for information discovery. Look at how the 10-yr future reacts to Fed announcements, or Corn futures react to usda releases. If markets had no price discovery ability left, then it should have no trading at all, or...

Completely understand why HFT must exist

Eh, with millions of transactions every business day, there's one a*shole of Corzine's magnitude every ten years or so... it's surely not perfect, but it's not terrible either. In any case, what are you proposing exactly? Nationalized exchanges?

Completely understand why HFT must exist

I get the 'fairness' argument here, but upon reflection, I'm not sure I fully agree that it's necessary for proximity to exchange to be fair. First, it's never been fair. Recall the days when the ol' time traders would employ their own agents and runners at the ports for information coming...

How to invest directly in UST yield changes

US 30YR yield was 2.9941% on Nov 18, 2011. It's 2.9713% now. So yeah, it's pretty close. Duration is the technical price/yield relationship between bonds. It's like a beta in how its used, but not quite how its calculated. See...
