Senate to end preferential tax for commodities?

Leaving aside the purpose of traders for now, capital gains taxes are a tax on the fruits from the deployment of savings. Deployed savings = investment. Investment = growing the economic pie. Taxes on capital gains discourage savings - why would any society, *especially* ours in the US want...

    How much are you worth?

This is one of those surveys where it would be better if you had to pay to participate and only get to see the results if you paid. It would bias the average upwards but the quality of information would be higher.

The Truth About Commodities, including Oil - Complete Speculation

If all these giant indexers are buying record millions of barrels of oil in the futures market (over the far months), they are also selling record millions of barrels of oil in the near months as they expire. Buying millions, selling millions, buying millions, selling millions. Are they...

Who else thinks Einhorn is fishy?

Another attention seeker bites the dust. Einhorn is a solid manager with money on the line backing his opinions. The only arbiter that counts is the market, and people that like the drag things into the court of public opinion usually are the ones with the devious personal agendas.

    What would you do?

It's human nature to have various itches that need to be scratched. Those itches might be inspirational leaps into a new life direction .... or they might simply be self-destructive. The problem with itches is that despite the best advice from all and sundry, they are very hard to ignore...

    Size - magnet or repulsor

For those who trade equity index futures. Do you think size in the order book is a magnet or a repulsor? Said in another way, should you display size or hide it. One theory is that in short time frames (seconds) it repels, but in longer time frames (10s of minutes) it attracts...

    Backtesting Vs Trading Index Futures

I'm not sure there is a right answer that takes the form of X days. I think it's important to test on short and long time frames in order to get a sense of how the strategy waxes and wanes, as it invariably will. Then you can work back to those periods and try to guess what market forces...

Question on ETFs of other countries

How does this prove that it is illegal to hold simultaneous positions in the underlying of INP and the ETN? Robbie's gratuitous comment reveals he is confusing the notion that the presence of arbitrage must mean that tracking error cannot exist. He forgets that while arbitrage can stop...

Question on ETFs of other countries

This is incorrect. ETFs are created when one submits a sufficiently large block of the underlying portfolio to a trust and the trust then turns around and issues ETF units back. Those units then get traded. There are no rules that say if you own the ETF you cannot trade the underlying...

    Profitability Question and Example

It's tedious, but if you want to analyze tax you have to use the right terminology and understand the calculation mechanism. The $10 brokerage fee is added to the tax basis of your asset. The tax basis is the consideration in the acquisition of an asset.

What regulations/limitations are there in promoting your CTA business online/offline

The OP should spend the $300 or so to talk to a lawyer well versed in these matters for the one hour it takes to get these questions answered. This is not the kind of thing to try to save money on by querying an internet bulletin board for basic knowledge on the law. Ordinarily I would not...

    Execution Trader?

Ultimately it has to do with what kind of remedial action the trader has to do when something goes wrong. If the backup instructions could be written down on the back of an envelope and followed by anybody, then you only have to pay for reliability and basic competence. But if the backup...

The Solitary Trader-Life Hampers Personal Growth?

I think you've pretty much given the sensible answer - if you are concerned about the withering away of your interpersonal skills you have to construct outlets to exercise those skills. Joining a club or doing non-profit work in your spare time is a good way to interact with others, any kind...

    Tradestation Futures

Yes. Sometimes people need to realize that contrary to what they were taught in politically correct high school, there *are* such things as dumb questions. The overblown sense of entitlement is sometimes a sight to behold. FWIW, Tradestation only offers US futures and German futures AFAIK...

    The real tragedy ... education

This is hardly the kind of attitude the black community needs in order to pull up its socks. The "woe is me" story is really getting old. Here in New York City you see immigrants coming off the proverbial boat everyday from China and Vietnam. These poor sods are loaded up with debt, can't...

    IB TEK Problems

I have two service providers on a failover and two brokers each on two primary workstations - I also saw an IB outage at the same time 2:30 EST yesterday that was not replicated on my other broker. So, it was clearly an IB issue.

    IB TEK Problems

Does IB distribute outage statistics or information? That would be great information. Everyone has outages now and then, but being able to quantify it would be very helpful.

    Mobile RT charts

I already find that I can do much more work on an iphone than I ever could on a blackberry. A mobile browser that you *actually* want to browse makes so much difference. The only reason for a BB is if you are tethered to Microsoft Exchange Server.
