Words of wisdom that give you perspective in your trading.

From my experience on ET, apart from a few posters, this is not the place to seek positivity or encouragement. It seems this site breeds and thrives on negativity, mockery, and a desire/expectation to see others fail. After a few short months here, my confidence in trading took a knock, but then...

Where could I find data for those? I'm guessing electricity is particularly volatile?

Yeah, I have heard electricity can be expensive to trade. When I saw it listed on TT, I thought it might be interesting to see the P/L dynamics of it. But alas, can't get filled on these contracts. Overall, this demo does seem more realistic.

Hi Patrick, thanks for the reply. I have a screenshot of the instrument I'm referring to here. Also, have tried getting filled in some of the electricity contracts, and it's showing 'Need access to data', I'm not sure what that means. Hard to get filled on some spreads too.

Yes, but they have a very wide variety of instruments to trade, which is also interesting. You're right, not getting filled on a touch is often an accurate reflection of live trading I guess. Here's a snap of account so far.

Since TT was mentioned, I decided to try their demo. Just opened it. Not getting filled on a lot of the contracts, unlike many other demos I have tried. Interestingly they have an 800 leg spread, which I never even contemplated before!!

From what I can gather on this site Bone, you're a fairly seasoned trader. In fact, spreads are one of my favorite trading insights, and I'm always interested in them. Any profit in trading is good, balancing wins and losses is the key. If a demo gives one skewed results, that is the fault of...

As I said before, I'm not an expert of Illiquid futures by any means. Neither do I claim to be an expert on futures in general. But, I have used a few demo/sim accounts in the past, and some have been more realistic than others. Obviously, a sim account can never give entirely accurate results...

My mistake, I meant building positions upto that amount. Indeed, it seems too good to be true. I will keep learning, as even making some money out of trading is better than nothing.

Not all in one go, no. This demo account begins with a virtual 100k. So what I did was start with say 2 or 3 contracts, bearing in mind the real life margin for outright Gold, Crude etc. Then using buying power from unrealized gains, added more and more until I hit 500 or 1000.

I was entering market orders of 500 or 1000 lots a time. I made sure to go below what I assumed would be the 'limit' in a real live account. To add, I would start with a few contract and build up margin using buying power.

Still learning as I go along tbh, I'm not entirely sure how illiquid contracts work, but I am assuming that traders add liquidity over time.

I thought the purpose of a market order was to fill at available prices? Regardless of volume.

Thanks for your input Yogi Trader, yes indeed I can see your point there. This is a demo account, but the prices do match up with live market data. Only for the fact that I was building on positions, the figure would not be so high in the account. Execution is the main issue.

Update to questions guys, here is another screenshot. This is of Jun 24 Gold. You can clearly see the last price(because of lack of trading activity) is much lower than both the bid and the ask prices. So, if I were to sell at the price, the platform gives a result of difference between bid and...

I'm Trading an RJ O'Brien futures account, and so far have made a lot of money...

All I can tell you, is that I was using Market orders in far out contracts. I never used any limit orders. In some cases, such as the Jun 25 Crude contract, there was a crossed market, ie Ask lower than bid. Also, with the RJO platform, the Last price is used as a marker between bid or ask...

The main contracts I have been trading have been far out listings, Gold (Jun 24), Crude Oil (Jun 25), and WTI (Mar 22). I spotted opportunity with these contracts, as although they had wide bid ask spreads, they also had a last price far enough away to increase my buying power, while waiting for...

What's the maximum number of futures contracts you can trade on any platform?

I'm wondering is there a limit on numbers of contracts one can open. I have heard of position limits, but not sure if they apply when the positions are closed within a day, or a few days. Say, hypothetically a trader had enough money to open 100,000 contracts in any instrument, can it be done?
