Yes, I've done that. Got it to boot with almost all the ini/startup/services turned off, so thought I was making progress, but then it reverted to the flashing screen no-boot, and often doesn't even seem to get to the BIOS. So, maybe it's motherboard or power supply? ges

Got past the password with the tweak above.

I tried the blank password and no luck. I'll contact the vendor on Monday. Someone suggested this registry tweak to eliminate the need for the admin password: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole SecurityLevel REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)...

It came from the company with XP installed and I don't remember setting a password. Oh well, I'm about to give up. The way it is acting, I really think it may be a hardware problem. Often the bios boot screen never appears and then you can't even get into safe mode or the recovery CD. ges

OK, did that. Got it to boot and am now trying to use the recovery console. It wants an effing administrator password. Huh? What the heck is the password? groan... ges

Got a message saying "System Restore is not able to protect your computer." ?? So, I'm trying to boot off the recovery CD, but can't get it to...any idea why? ges
