What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

Ah, I think you are right - corrected one thing in my spreadsheet wmwmw. So holding all TQQQ since its inception, I see a max drawdown at 69.92% with a 51.91% IRR - that look/sound right to you? Holding 50/50 TQQQ/GLD since inception I have a 31.95% IRR and a 43.35% max drawdown. That would...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

wmwmw, I might try and simulate what you are proposing exactly. But when you say: "Whenever TQQQ drop below 10%, inject all capital from GLD into TQQQ." What do you mean? You mean when TQQQ drops 90% from its highs? That's when you sell your GLD and go all into TQQQ? If that is right...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

These are just inverse to one another, so while they would help reduce my drawdown on a TQQQ investment, they would also drive my long term return to virtually zero, probably negative (assuming 50% in TQQQ and 50% in SQQQ for example - that would almost certainly lose money over time) .

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

I like your thinking wmwmw! I suspect 50% in TQQQ 50% in GLD is too much in TQQQ, your drawdown will be too much. But I will test it. Wait, in fact, I already have. :) Starting 2/11/10, when TQQQ first came about, if you had stuck 50% of your portfolio in each of TQQQ and GLD, you'd have...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

That is another way to go, and I will do some tests on that. But there is a few problems there - 1. I am talking about very large dollar amounts here. Like hundreds of thousands of dollars. That makes it a bit impractical to be buying and selling all on the crossovers. 2. Buying and...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

Because you can get a much higher % return with much smaller investment. And given the HUGE logarithmic returns over time you can start even smaller and let it compound up. So you can have just a very small amount invested in TQQQ over the long haul and still come out the same as if you have...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

Yea, I bet TLT would have been really good. But I wouldn't feel comfortable with it now with rates near zero - set for a huge fall whenever they creep up. But thanks Girija, just the kind of stuff I'm looking for!

Nice article fan27, thanks! Those huge drawdowns are indeed what I'm trying to fight against.

    TQQQ > SOXL

SOXL begin its life 3/11/10. An investment of $100 then would have turned into $5,512.49 today. That's an IRR of 43.03%. Max drawdown on the account was 80.38%. Same thing with TQQQ beginning on 3/11/10 - $100 would have turned into $8,823.58, for an IRR of 49.17%, max drawdown was 69.92%...

What would a good ETF/fund be to balance TQQQ?

I'm looking for an ETF/fund where I can say invest X% percent of my portfolio in TQQQ, then 100% - X% of my portfolio in this other fund, where I'll still go way positive in the long run but this other ETF/fund will help minimize my drawdowns on the TQQQ side but still not hurt (help if...

    TQQQ...

50% seems a LOT to put in TQQQ. You will almost certainly get a 99%+ loss in TQQQ eventually, and losing about half your portfolio would probably be devastating for most anyone. But I like your overall strategy. You want enough in TQQQ over the long haul to take advantage of its logarithmic...

    TQQQ...

Yo manic. So I did some testing and "simulation" myself. I first compared TQQQ to QQQ for each day TQQQ has been in existence (beginning February 2010). If QQQ has an up day, TQQQ on average goes up 293.72% as much. If QQQ has a down day, TQQQ on average goes down 300.99% as much. If QQQ...

Well damn man, I'm going to have to do some testing. You are hitting at the heart of the matter, or at least it appears you are. Will follow up, likely tomorrow. Thanks and have a great night!!!

    TQQQ...

So you "simulated" it. Let me get this straight. QQQ is up like 300% since its tech bubble peak (like 327 or something today versus 102 at tech bubble peak or something like that). Don't bust my balls on the numbers, but something like that. And, even though TQQQ is supposed to do 3x what...
