    Another “what’s your edge” thread

I think I’m coming around to the idea that I feel most comfortable buying stocks that are in an uptrend, with good relative strength, preferably in leading sectors, that have pulled back to a key moving average on decreasing volume.

Neither do I. Market is guilty until proven innocent

    Bottom fishing...Amazon

yeah I lost a few bucks on it. Actually bought a number of years ago and then sold, made a bunch. But like an idiot bought back half on a drop, then sold that half at the $143 price (split adjusted), lost a few on that. Not trying any counter trend rally trades right now. Let the election pass...

    Bottom fishing...Amazon

I owned AMZN, sold it back in April at 143, after it broke support. I sold it strictly based on technicals. But from a fundamental, long term perspective, I think, AMZN will do ok, meaning, you might as well buy SPY. In this case, Minervini is right. The easy money in AMZN has been made. From...

    Strong support? Major bottom?

I think it’s simple math. AUM down, expenses fixed, = earnings down =stock price trashed. That’s where we are. Bad news built in. Could it go lower if we get another leg down? Sure. But I’m not looking to pick a bottom here, lot of risk already taken off the table. TROW in a lot of 401Ks so...

    Strong support? Major bottom?

yeah, I get that, but don’t think that’s the case in all areas. We’re in a bear market. Good stocks get trashed. Bear markets create danger for traders and opportunity for investors.

    Strong support? Major bottom?

What are we looking at? The price chart coming down into the volume chart?

    Strong support? Major bottom?

my opinion? Market. Lifts all boats and Vice versa. WBA isn’t exactly a fast grower. And TROW is dependent on AUM, which obviously drops with the market I think they come back in a year or two, meanwhile Your getting a 5% dividend.

CANSLIM stocks based on score, if, how much do they outperform riskadjusted ?

Just an experiment. when I actually by a stock I check the chart, earnings growth, etc.

    Strong support? Major bottom?

as a trader, day or swing, yes. But as a longer term investor even as a position trader, I disagree. If I buy a stock like WBA (Boots Walgreens) for example, right now, with a terrible chart, trading at 7x next years Earnings, with a dividend yield of 5%, which is a result of the stock being...

CANSLIM stocks based on score, if, how much do they outperform riskadjusted ?

Thanks, this is interesting. right now it shows “0” stocks coming up in the CANSLIM screen. I’m guessing that’s more a function of having to be a member/logged in, than market conditions.

    Strong support? Major bottom?

I tend to focus on valuation. Forward P/E, PEG Ratio, using consensus estimates, then, often if it’s a company with volatile earnings history, I will reduce the “E” in the P/E by 10%. I also like to look at cash flow, and quick ratio in the balance sheet. And often, depending on what I’m looking...

CANSLIM stocks based on score, if, how much do they outperform riskadjusted ?

I agree that FFTY is not a valid test of the CANSLIM methodology. You just can’t manage a fund , even an ETF to the exact strategy, the flexibility is just not available to the find manager. I don’t know the details, but I’m guessing they make changes in the ETF every month or every quarter.

CANSLIM stocks based on score, if, how much do they outperform riskadjusted ?

It’s funny this came up this week. I’ve been thinking about doing a paper money experiment. Using the IBD 50 list. It uses the CANSLIM methodology , both fundamental and some technical (RS). I’m going to try to sweat it up in the next few days. Buying the top 5 or top 10 in the IBD 50, checking...

    Strong support? Major bottom?

Yes position trading. In the past when I talked investing, I meant long term, pretty much buy, hold, and add. Now, being retired, I’m no longer adding and I don’t hold Thru markets like these. That’s what I’m talking about, using the longer time frame charts to decide when to be in, and when to...

    Strong support? Major bottom?

Was thinking about starting a thread for investment (not trade) ideas. Is it even worth doing that here? Or is everyone pure trader

    Strong support? Major bottom?

I am realizing that as an INVESTOR, looking for good ideas in a depressed market. The weekly time frame, which I never looked at much, before, is pretty valuable, and even, important.

    Strong support? Major bottom?

Last time the S&P 500 traded below the 200 week MA and stayed there for any length of time was 2008-2009. Since then, only the Covid low brought us below the 200 week and it bounced back fast. We are right at the 200 week now. If it holds…. of course nobody here gives a crap about a weekly...
