I have two friends that swear by Harmony remotes (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/remotes/universal-remotes). As I understand the concept you essentially plug the remote in to your computer, go to a website, tell them what equipment you have and voila it's programmed.

Bingo! Very simple on a stock iPhone. You can either turn off Locations Services completely or turn it on only for specific apps.
