Buying Put Options instead of Shorting

Have you tried deep-in-the-money puts? The spread, as a percentage of the stock price, is usually much smaller.

ZMAPI - open source vendor agnostic financial API

First, congrats on your first release of a very ambitious project. However, I cannot see any serious trader using it. Unless you plan to eventually charge for the API, I suspect that eventually you will tire of maintaining the code, and anyone who coded to the API will be stuck with no future...

is there a broker where it's affordable to trade a small number of shares?

I never knew that. I wonder if this applies to both TWS and the Gateway (which I mostly use).

is there a broker where it's affordable to trade a small number of shares?

StockPile.com allows you to buy a specific dollar amount of stock, instead of specifying the number of shares. I assume that they buy full shares, and aggregate the fractions internally. I have recommended it to a couple friends who wanted to invest in the market with small amounts, and they...

is there a broker where it's affordable to trade a small number of shares?

Interactive Brokers has low fees, but I believe they require a minimum of $10,000 in the account. I also believe they have a monthly minimum fee if you don't do any trading. For smaller accounts, check out StockPile.com; they even allow buying fractional shares.

Time to bargain shop or expect more downward momentum?

There is no way to know when the bottom has been reached, so the best strategy here for long term investments, is to keep buying, but not all at once. Use 10 to 20% of your cash and buy some stocks. If the market goes down more the next day or two, buy 10 to 20% more. Keep doing that until...

Tax deductions from home improvements used as a business.

This sounds pretty complicated. You definitely need to run it by you accountant.

    Monday call! Up or down?

By 05:30AM on Friday morning all the equity futures were already down 0.4% to 0.7%. This was even before the Exxon and Chevron earnings releases, and the employment announcements indicating a possible rate rise and inflation uptick. Add to that a downgrade of Apple, and bad Google earnings...

Comfortable and egronomic yet priced right (less than $500) chair for trading

I usually use 3 screens. For my main screen which is a 24" in portrait mode, the height is set so that my middle of the screen lines up with my eyes. For my other two monitors, both in landscape mode, the the top of the screens are just below eye level. Not ideal, but raising them higher would...

Is it possible to become rich by trading?

Is it possible to become rich by trading? Of course. There are many traders who have become rich. Is one likely to become rich by trading? No. Between commissions, slippage, realtime quotes and other fees, Traders start off with the odds against them. Only the very best survive, much less get rich.

Comfortable and egronomic yet priced right (less than $500) chair for trading

I also notice that I am much more active when standing all day, than on those days when I trade away from home and sit at a desk. My FitBit confirms this. The first few weeks of standing while working was very tiring, but now my body is used to it.

Comfortable and egronomic yet priced right (less than $500) chair for trading

I suggest you google what sitting at a desk 8+ hours a day does to your body.

Comfortable and egronomic yet priced right (less than $500) chair for trading

My suggestion is to put the money towards a standing desk, and an anti-fatigue mat to stand on. Better for you health-wise, and you definitely will not be falling asleep at your desk in the afternoons.

    Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10?

What are you trying to backup? Your data or your entire system. If you just want to backup your data, why are you buying another system? Windows is anything but maintenance free. If you buy a Linux backup system, unless you regularly maintain and test the system, you don't have a backup.

capital gains tax when moving to another state

As ajacobson stressed, ask your accountant beforehand. No matter what scheme you choose, if your accountant does go along, or won't put his name on your tax return, you are screwed. I once asked my accountant about state taxes if you live in two different states during a year, and she stated...

Largest Cities in North America By Population

Yep, you are right. The map shows that they include all of New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester and Long Island. There is a lot of farm land and forest that they include in New York CITY.

Largest Cities in North America By Population

I would like to know how they calculated the population of New York City as 23+ million. I understand that they are including some of the surrounding areas, but if you add the population of NYC (8.5 million) + Westchester (0.9 million) + New Jersey (8.8 million) + Connecticut (3.6 million) it...

IB - Your secure code card has expired

Perhaps IB has changed, but 3 years ago they gave me the option of a printed plastic card with a couple hundred security codes, or a security device that generates a one-time security code. I chose the plastic card.

IB - Your secure code card has expired

If you haven't done so already, tell them to send you the plastic printed card instead of the electronic security device. Then copy the plastic card to your smartphone as an encrypted image, and you never have to worry about losing the electronic card, or not having it with you.

How certain are you of the trades you place?

Your question implies that no trader would make a trade when she believes that the odds are less than 50%. Actually there are several reasons to make a trade when the odds are quite low, including hedging against another winning position, closing out a position to free up cash, to rebalance a...
