    Need Laptop advice

This is a laptop with a mediocre CPU, a very slow hard drive and low display resolution. I assume that you are looking at a used laptop, if not, don't buy it. As another response stated, whether it will fit your needs depends on what you will be using it for.

Can anyone recommend a company to build a workstation?

There are companies that specialize in building workstations specifically for traders, such as https://www.tradingcomputers.com/ They will be very expensive, but they will hold your hands and explain all your options. I would recommend DellOutlet.com - much less expensive and come with...

    Dropbox (DBX)

BABA is already doing fine in Cloud Services, and will do fine with online storage, in the China market. But no way will American firms trust BABA with storing their data.

    Dropbox (DBX)

I can't agree with you analysis. I doubt that Amazon and Apple will bury DBX. First DBX does not make money off consumers who mostly have free accounts. They make it off businesses, who seem to have standardized on Dropbox as the number one site for sharing big data files. Also, I think there...

Help me make a tool for pair trading

I tried it on a Chromebook. None of the links to the pairs work. I suggest that you install Chrome on your Mac and retest.

importing vast set of financial data into mysql

It depends on the Bloomberg data. Does their data always have an entry for nn:00 even if there was no transaction for that minute? Also, seperate tables for hourly or EOD would be significantly smaller and easier to work with. I would suggest starting small, such as with the DOW 30 stocks...

importing vast set of financial data into mysql

You are correct. It appears that MySql got rid of the 4GB Community Server limitation in the 5.* versions.

importing vast set of financial data into mysql

To insert the records in to mysql, there is a "LOAD DATA INFILE" commad that is very fast. Google it for lots of examples. A few hints: Assuming you only want records from 09:30AM to 4PM, for 1000 symbols that works out to: 6.5 hours * 60 minutes * 1000 symbols = 390,000 records per day Or...

Big biotech companies have flushed $100 billion in stock buybacks down the toilet

The buybacks did provide one big benefit. They increased the compensation to any executives whose pay is tied to the companies Earnings Per Share. Buybacks are the only method that companies have to try to lift the stock price, that also rewards the executives. All other methods (Regular...

Shorting the market in a non margin account. No direct shorting of stocks.

A very useful website. Good weekly market summary, many good links. Thanks.

Shorting the market in a non margin account. No direct shorting of stocks.

As far as I know ETNs are backed up by the credit worthiness of the sponsoring institution, not by holding actual shares. It can be risky to hold ETNs long term. Its been 10 years since Lehman went bankrupt, and investors owning Lehman ETNs are still trying to get their money back.

Shorting the market in a non margin account. No direct shorting of stocks.

You can hold inverse ETNs for the long term, just not the ones that are inverse and leveraged. There are a few inverse ETFs that do short actual stocks, not just hold futures. Check out AdvisoryShares DWSH and HDGE.

Robot ETF Leaves Pros in Dust, Scoring Wins on Small-Cap Fliers

I do wish that the authors of the study had dug a bit more into the AIEQ ETF's holdings before printing such a deceptive article. AIEQ is beating the S&P because its largest holdings, by far, are tech stocks. And not just small cap tech stocks, but mega cap tech stocks. Its largest current...

    NxCore is no longer offered

Yep. I had thought that the NxCore server software would simply be moved from DTN to QUODD. But it appears that at least some of the software is a rewrite, because the QUODD software is not supporting a large part of the features that DTN does. In particular, QUODD first offered software that...

Cheap way to move residency to Hong kong or Singapore

    a) The contribution is only US $5,000 per year, and it is to a Puerto Rican charity, not to Puerto Rico itself. b) The 5-people employment requirement is, and has always been, for Act 20 (businesses moving to PR), not for Act 22 (individuals moving to PR).

what happens to capital loss carryovers when i move to a new country

As long as you are still a U.S. citizen, you have to pay U.S. income taxes, no matter where in the world you reside. So your capital loss carryovers should still apply. Also, you get to deduct any foreign taxes paid. The only way around this is to become a citizen of another country, and...
