    Good Data Vendor for Testing?

For EoD data I can strongly recommend Pinncle Data, very reliable. http://www.pinnacledata.com/ There has been discussion on other forums re: CSI has had some strange policy change of recent times that somehow locks you out of your (paid for) history.

    Eyes on Fire

These are the type used by air traffic controllers, and are supposed to be excellent if you need to sit for extended periods (which about sums us up as a group I guess ;-) )

    Best Programming Language to Learn

Of course it depends on what you intend to program, but for my money it has to be C++ - well supported, powerful and relatively easy to understand. I had previously spent time with VB but was guided towards C++ and I am very grateful for that guidance. :D

    Looking for Futures Broker

I use PFG BEST and it works OK, although there were some software problems in the past which seem to have been fixed for the past 3 or 4 months.

    Eyes on Fire

I dumped my old 'sunlamp' crt a few months ago in favor of a Mitsubishi LCD - MUCH easier on the eyes. Using DVI input from a Matrox card. Also installed a skylight into my office (I work from home) and the combination of natural light with the LCD is terrific! Haven't tried the lava lamp...

    walk-forward optimization software?

No question, the support I have received (and continue to receive) has been first-class in every respect. As to achievement, I am now doing stuff I could only dream about with TradeStation.

    walk-forward optimization software?

Download the demo and find out: www.tickquest.com or www.neoticker.com. Very slick, uses VB for code.

    walk-forward optimization software?

Difficulty is difficult ;-) to define - PowerST is VERY powerful and VERY flexible, but the payoff for all that power and flexibility is more code. I certainly prefer it to TradeStation due to the lack of coding limitations - PowerST uses a subset of C++ as its native language so pretty much...

    walk-forward optimization software?

Agree entirely! I use PowerST to do walkforward testing (www.powertesting.com) in conjuction with some Access database charting to visually evalulate the results. Basis is: 1. Set up a universe of market/systems; 2. Define timeslices (95-98, 96-99, etc); 3. Define parameters to be...

    What attracted you to trading?

To me, trading equals freedom - I and I alone am responsible for my actions and the results of those actions. I do not like (and never did like) having to rely on other people for a living. That and the increasing level of petty politics in my former profession (engineering) helped me to move...

    Order Placement Platform Suggestions?

I would appreciate ANY suggestions for order-placement platforms to suit the following requirements: Position trader based in Australia. All orders placed outside of US trading hours for action on the next trading day. Some open outcry markets. Reliability is the prime requirement...

Can an average guy make a living at trading?

Hi Ed. You are indeed a brave soul. Retrenched at 59 has to be rough, however it just COULD be the start of something great - life is in the perception IMHO. I found the late Bruce Babcock to be a beacon - I would suggest reading each of the links on this page...

What would you do if 25 yrs old?

Wonderful thread! My $0.02 worth, from the perspective of being one week away from my 51st birthday: 1. All you really have in life is TIME. It is how you choose to spend that time that determines the quality of your life. 2. You need to have money (aka bread) as a buffer against the...

    PFG BEST Direct

Anyone using PFG BEST Direct as an order entry platform? I am a PFG client so am forced to use this thing, but it lacks reliability IMO - often end up emailing my broker with the order or a moved stop, etc. (Which is not too bad as I am a medium-term position trader.) Appreciate...

    Windows 2000 Pro vs. XP

to spreadem: Yes, better driver support, slightly quicker. to j medved: You may care to dump Outlook and go with The_Bat! (www.ritlabs.com/the_bat) - IMO this thing runs rings around the MS product and is far less vulnerable to attack.

    Windows 2000 Pro vs. XP

I went the upgrade route a few months ago - from Win 2000 Pro to XP Pro - and have been happy with the result. XP Pro is a little quicker on big data crunching operations (or so it seems to me) and is a lot quicker to start and stop the OS. I used the blackviper set of tweaks and dropped...
