    P4 vs. Athlon XP-M 2500+

I did some asking around before I got my current (Athalon) setup and the feedback I got was that the Athalon is better for more numerically intense operations. I asked my ISP, who does SETI runs. He has two machines that he uses for this: a twin cpu setup running 2x 2.0 P4's; and a single...

    Is 126 RAM to little?

512MB is the minimum required IMO. If it's tweaking you want, check out www.blackviper.com and look for XP Tweaks in the left sidebar - good sensible Services configuration.

need a cheap but good EOD data source

I have been using Pinnacle Data (www.PinnacleData.com) for a few years and they are excellent. Around $12/month, clean data with 3 choices of back-adjustment.

How much should a "good" trader earn?

Firstly, any statistic is only meaningful in a specific situation. My situation is that of a position trader in commodities. That said, my target is to grow my trading account by 50% each year. Some years I manage this, some years not. As others have said so eloquently, part of the appeal...

    Good software for beginning traders?

For a start nothing gives advice (and if something does you don't want to listen to it anyway!). Lets assume that you want to start with some charting software - something that will let you look at the chart for a given market. NeoTicker sells a good product that will access data from the...

I keep doing the wrong thing

Develop and test your system thoroughly. Determine that it has positive expectation and then follow it religiously. That means NO deviation from the system - every trade must be taken, exactly as indicated. No discretion whatsoever. If you can do that then you stand a good chance that the...

Lessons Learned From Profitable System Development

Great post Smitty! I have a backtesting system that allows me to throw any system at a universe of markets and run various parameter sets over varying time frames. I then chart the results, and not a whole lot of systems really work that well. (Some do, of course, otherwise we would not be doing...

Should I add memory or get a new pc?

I have had some real turkeys over the years , all bought off the shelf, so for my current machine I went a different way and specified all name-brand components (ASUS mobo, AMD cpu, Matrox video card, Maxtor hdd's, etc) and I am VERY pleased that I did - this thing really flies :D! (I do a...

Position trading - when the market runs away from you

All of my meagre experience has shown that if you miss a move or see it too late then forget it and wait for the next signal (remember that I am a mech systems kinda guy). If you go outside of your system you increase the possibility of increasing your losses markedly.

    Any Position Traders Out There?

Thanks for all the responses - good to know that I am not the only one of my kind! :D Another question for my EoD brethren: how do you assess system performance when testing? My preference is for things like Ryan Jones Expectancy ($Return for $Risked per trade) and the annualized version...

    Systemized profit-taking?

Damn that is complicated! My math is bad at the best of times, so the algebra is wasted on me, sorry. The 2 in my prev post refers to Opp*Exp, which means for each dollar I risk I stand to get 2 back (in addition to my original dollar) each year. Hope that clears it up. Position trader, EoD...

    Systemized profit-taking?

Sorry, should have been more specific. Opportunity = trades per year; Expectancy = [1+(avgWin/avgLoss)]*%Win -1 Therefore Opp*Exp = $ return pa for dollar risked.

    Systemized profit-taking?

    Most have an Opportunity*Expectancy of > 2.

    Systemized profit-taking?

My testing to date indicates that profit targets generally reduce system performance (unless the system is extremely bad to start with). I prefer adaptive trailing stops or reverse signals.

Best Place to trade in the world - Quality of Life

Belize interests me - they have immigration plans available www.belize.com - anyone living and trading from there? On the Caribbean coast. Some of the South Pacific is good - Vanuatu, Fiji, etc, but islands and hurricanes can be a bad mix at times. Australia is fine for quality of life...
