What are the best prop firms in NYC

exactly...I'm a high vol. trader only because it's my style not because of the firm; but when doing high vol. (3-4M+), commission is everything. I traded with a firm at .01 scaled down to .0075 and didn't make much. Found out later you can easily get .005 (prop or retail) at other firms.

Any advice for a beginner short-term trader?

Before you start trading: place $5000 cash in a pile and light it on fire...you need to be able to handle that feeling bacause it's the reality of what the market can and will do to you many times. :D

    Optionetics

my argument with all these courses, programs, informercials, etc. is that if it REALLY is that easy, foolproof, profitable and all the other hype--then why don't they just hire teams of traders to trade? Infomercials, advertising, hotel conferences all cost a great deal of money and involve risk.

    Esignal gripe

I had the same problem (nyse filtering) and its been fixed. tech support was awesome. the problem was with Tradestation 2000i unchecking the regional collection checkbox in the global settings of the data manager.

Turn the NYSE into an ECN

I don't understand all this complaining re specialist's tricks...if you keep getting taken by a specialist then don't trade with him or even their firm if their style comes from the top down. do your homework. trade with different specs till you find one that you can make money with. or do this...
