If you have an open short position going into a dividend payment by the company you are short, is that dividend somehow accounted for in your short position by adjusting the price you paid or debiting your account, etc.? Or are you entitled to the dividend also? (I don't believe so)...

I don't deal much with stocks anymore so I am wondering.....Back when I did and I wanted to short a stock most often, if it was a company of any size, I simply did. How does it work now? What happens if you just try to send the order?
