If you aren't good enough to trade full time now what makes you think you will be in 5 years?

Advice about getting in the door

Be careful with Robert Half, those guys post fake jobs to build their resume database. I would also be willing to bet that "assistant trader" means middle/back office analyst in this case.

Advice about getting in the door

You should do some research and pinpoint exactly what type of trader you want to be. Basically at a hedge fund there are a couple types- portfolio managers: these guys run a portfolio and get to decide what to trade and when. They have discretion over what they buy and sell and usually have a...

Advice about getting in the door

It's not as easy as it sounds to just go out there and get on a desk. There are plenty of guys who have finance degrees AND many years already on a desk who cannot find jobs right now. Trying to get in with an engineering degree and no experience probably isnt going to cut it unless you find a...

Requirements to get a margin account at IB?

Well after a third call to them this morning I couldn't get anymore information so I guess I'm going to move my account because I'm losing patience with these guys. For whoever said I gave too much info I guess you haven't opened an account at IB- they require all of this info, even for a cash...

Requirements to get a margin account at IB?

And what answer would that be? I want to stick with IB, I actually have another account that I manage there with a much larger amount of money in it which I use margin on, but I want to keep this new account totally seperate. If I need to have 30 or 40 or 50k in it to get margin that is fine...

Requirements to get a margin account at IB?

I opened a cash account at IB about a month ago and just requested an upgrade to margin and was denied. They read me a form letter saying that I could apply again if my employment situtation and account balance changed in the future. (I'm self employed and trading for a living and this...

    any day trading Hedge Funds?

Many of the smaller traders are short term, but I wouldn't call them day traders. The bigger PM's at the fund tend to be position traders who scale in and trade around their positions for months at a time.

    any day trading Hedge Funds?

SAC trades alot but they are so big now that most of their positions are longer term. Doesn't stop them from trading actively around many positions though. Steve day trades the eminis quite actively still.

Was this Crappiest Week in a Month?

It wasn't bad by any means but my past two months have been pretty big, so comparatively, yes, it was the crappiest week in a month!

    Credit Suisse downgrades Goldman.

Downgrades are such BS...the analysts have NO IDEA what they are talking about. So you're telling me that I should sell but you expect the stock to go up ~47%...thanks CS. By doing that they are just hedging their bets so they can say "told you so" either way. DB did the same thing, their...

    Buy SKF or not ?

Right now SKF is a great trade below 117 but you need to have guts due to the volatility in the financial sector. You might buy at 117 and be in a hole when it hits 112 later that day but you will probably get to unload at 145 a couple days later.

    Max Leverage Trading

Having a stop that close is nice in theory but what are the chances that you are going to catch the trade at the perfect time? Even when I'm trading for pennies things go against me a bit on the entry at times. If I got stopped out everytime this happened I would never make any money.

    interview in nyc

It's not a job, its a prop firm. You put in a deposit and that covers training and any losses you might have. Basically they provide you with leverage and a seat on a desk, if you make money, great, they take a cut, if you lose more than you deposited they fire you and keep your deposit to cover...

What do all these guys actually do on the trading floor? How much do they make?

updates on order flows coming through the desk, news, analyst comments, general sentiment on the trading floor, etc. The most important thing that a guy on an institutional desk can usually offer is color on the order flows he is seeing from other customers. Obviously he can't name names, but...

What do all these guys actually do on the trading floor? How much do they make?

There are a few traders in there who make markets but the majority are salesmen who are taking customer orders, matching up clients to take trades, giving market color, etc. The others are middle office trade and sales support, assistants, etc. The prop guys have to be isolated from the sales &...

How do large firms and pros place orders?

Yeah because if you are a trader to whom buying stock for a trade means 1mm+ shares and you put this order into the market it is going to run immediately and your trade will be gone. All of these methods let the big guys trade like they were little guys. The PM at a hedge fund who wants to day...
