A good friend of mine recently moved from San Luis Obispo (SLO) to Lake Travis (Austin). He is a retired Cal Poly comp. sci. professor with a couple of patents, so it was probably so he could keep more of his money. I visited him in SLO about 15 years ago and loved the place. Stosh

I spent 6 years in school there in the 60's and 70's. It was really great then....getting a little crowded now. I think there are still bats at Bee Caves... I'm going to spend a week there next month and I will inquire about the bats. Also the women don't have that big hair...

You are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG....about the mosquitoes, that is. Austin is about the only place that mosquitoes are kept under control by all the bats, that live under the Town Lake bridge. :p Stosh

There's a big difference between a high-tax socialist state that is broke because of out of control spending....and a low-tax (no income tax), small gov't state that is in a bind because of reluctance to tax and spend. I think the latter is preferable. Stosh

They are probably in denial, but you raise an important issue. Don't you think Obama should be warning them all about this imminent danger in all of his speeches and telling them to get out now?? Stosh

Overeating does seem to be a multiracial pastime. But let us not get distracted, this thread is about bashing the failed socialist state of Kalifornia and performing a forensic autopsy on the remains to determine how it was killed. Stosh

Nice summation of the problem, JEM, thanks. I remember a similar thread to this one several months back, and there were quite a few defenders and excusers for the California debacle....possible even 50-50. But to my surprise this thread only has had a couple of Cali defenders. I'm wondering...

What about all the poor CPA's, tax lawyers, tax collectors, etc. that would have to find other work if a consumption tax replaced income tax?

A re-known economist is one you used to know that you just rediscovered.......kind of like a re-known illiterate trailer monkey. LOL....Stosh

Interesting.....thanks for the link. I googled and found that their governor, one senator, and both representatives are Democrats. That is not conclusive, but might imply that it is currently not a hotbed of conservatism. Stosh

I read that California municipal bonds are yielding 6-8%. One would think that an Obama bailout would result in lower yields... but I don't really know. Stosh

Thanks. Wouldn't it be great if California were to learn from this, get their house in order, and set an example for the country as they did many years ago? Maybe they will have to declare bankruptcy and then be unable to float bonds......starting over on a cash only budget could be a...

A list of specifics could run into the hundreds or thousands......if you focus on specifics, nothing will ever be solved. It is about PHILOSOPHY!!! You seem to stress an inability to raise taxes as a problem.....that is not the problem, spending is the problem. That is what is causing all...

Everything you said supports everything I said. You're just trying to find a list of excuses for the runaway spending. Don't get me wrong.....it is not just California, they are just out front in a race to the bottom. My state is heading there also.......politicians will buy votes with...
