    Whoa Baby! What happened?

If I were to put my tin-foil hat on and guess at a conspiracy theory - I would say that it had to be someone who had access to Globex and who could see where all of the distant stops were for swing traders/hedgefunds. 1.) It could have been a large trader with the idea of running the stops on...

    Whoa Baby! What happened?

Here is an email I got in reply from the CME regarding yesterdays emini price spike. We have received your e-mail dated 02/04/2003 concerning the movement of the E-mini S&P 500® futures contract just after 3:07 p.m. CST on February 4, 2003. At that time, the March 2003 E-mini S&P 500 futures...

    Whoa Baby! What happened?

Now that the CME is a public company, you would think that some of the ratings agencies would be concerned by an event that could scare people away from trading CME's electronic products. Especially since almost all of their earnings growth comes from the electronic products.

    Whoa Baby! What happened?

CME is going to ruin their franchise if they don't do something to maintain an orderly market in the emini. With most of their income growth coming from electronic trading - their corporate results are going to be hurt if they continue scaring away traders with fiascos like today.

Please censor all of these idiots - its usually a couple of people with multiple handles. They have ruined a lot of other trading forums with non-trading related non-sense - I hope they don't ruin this one. Keep up the good work Baron. This is the best free trading forum that I am aware...

will computers ever take over the markets?

I think the exchange/order execution function will go all computer eventually. This will reduce the friction-cost of executing a trade to the lowest common denominator. Think Wallmart. As far as guessing the direction of the market - I think it will be human judgement assisted by computers...

    emini tick change???

You are right, I erroneously used the word liquidity instead of volume in the above two posts. It would shift VOLUME to the emini, which would provide an increase in natural liquidity (for the emini). This would offset the artificial liquidity created by a wide spread due to the .25 tick...

    emini tick change???

The liquidity would come from hedge funds moving more of their business to the emini (from the pit). A comparison with equities and decimalization isn't the same. IMHO

    emini tick change???

If the tick were reduced to .10, traders would save a potential $7.50 on each emini. This would increase the participation in the emini from medium and large hedge funds - making the emini even more liquid. Since most of the arbitrage seems to be initiated in the emini and exited in the...

    emini tick change???

Think about it. The guys in the pit know who the pit arbs are (the guys with the headphones on). Why should they make a .10 wide market and let the arbs grab .25? So instead the spread widens to .20+ in the pit and the arbs start making less money. However the institutions now have a...

    emini tick change???

It will happen soon. The tick differential between the pit (.10) and the emini (.25) is distorting the market and causing the spread to widen in the pit contract - why should the pit traders give all the money to the emini arbs. Now the big guys are starting to get ripped off.
