....the more I think this spike was probably caused by a large trader moving his business from the pit to the emini and trying to fill an order in the emini the way he would in the pit. Perhaps the CME's new "Stops logic" will be something that slows down trading whenever futures gets way out...

Could be more institutions moving over to the emini from the pit contract. Could also be a reason for these spikes as the institutional traders screw up when converting to electronic trading. Just speculating. :)

You would have to have a screen set-up showing all the indexes on a 1 minute chart with volume. Perhaps having ES (s&p500), YM (Dow), NQ (Nasdaq) and whatever other instrument moves with the indexes SPY, DIA, QQQ, DAX, GE. It would have to be something handy that could be brought up for...

Agree - forget the news, watch the indexes - see if one is initiating the move or if all indexes are moving equally. Of course you have to be quick.

The reason for these spikes in the electronic indexes has, IMHO, to do with a flaw in the way the e-contracts are traded that is going to have to be addressed in some manner. There has to be some type of circuit breaker that controls how far out of wack the futures can get from the cash...
