Ask Yourself WHY the SEC is even considering banning ALL short selling.....

Best question I've heard all week.

Cox addresses illegal short selling aiding market collapse.

also, if there are so many "good financials", then why do they all need a trillion dollar bailout? Let the good financials buy the bad ones. The short ban is a racket and the SEC is a racketeer. Pure and simple.

Cox addresses illegal short selling aiding market collapse.

naked short selling in financials, huh? All were easy to borrow and the short interest in bank stocks declined 3% from a peak of only around 20-24% at its peak in July. In July, when they were restricted to pre-borrow, they were easy to borrow and the rebate never changed on them throughout...

Why can't those who hold mortgage securities take the loss & not banks?

Also, banks won't chase people who are unlikely to have any assets as they will never actually recover anything. The original poster had a point. While a lot of these trash mortgages were left on the banks' books, many more were sold to foreign governments and foreign banks. Why American...

Paulson basically wants to reward failure

So, you didn't get my humour? I was only half kidding anyway. Executive compensation is none of your business unless you're a shareholder of the company. How much people decide to pay those they hire is not a perversion of the capitalist system - it is by definition a function of the free...

They just banned short selling in US

Exactly. The Karachi stock exchange (trailblazer that it is) banned short selling earlier this year. After an initial 11% pop, the market fell to 25% below pre-short ban levels. Shorts provide downside pressure when they sell and upside pressure when they cover - just like longs who buy...

Short-sale ban list expands - I am shocked

It would be much better to just close the exchanges for a few days. I could use the vacation after last week.

Paulson basically wants to reward failure

Okay, confiscate and hang them (start with Johnny Mack). But... You're underestimating the power of compensation caps - if you make them low enough. Low compensation will attract only dumbasses who can't get a real job. That'll level the intellectual playing field between the banks who...

is the US a third world country?

It's trying desperately to be a third world country.

They just banned short selling in US

How much have you dealt with the SEC? I've seen nothing that tells me that they are obviously smart. I see a bunch of incompetent tools trying desperately to appear relevant. How is a perfectly functioning market in need of "Martial law"? Why does is a market reflecting justifiably...

They just banned short selling in US

They aren't creating any more because they can't short, making them closed end funds, not ETFs. Heavy demand will drive them to premiums and you'll be effectively shorting the stocks lower than they trade in the stock market. It'll cost ya'.

They just banned short selling in US

Nitro, as the market sinks, the SEC's stupidity grows. The entire first page and a half of the Orders could have been summed up "in an effort to prevent price discovery because we don't like the prices being discovered....." Every options MM I know was beyond confused. Today, I heard a...

They just banned short selling in US

Nothing prevents you from buying puts when you initiate your long position. But to buy puts, the options market maker needs to be able to sell the stock to hedge his position. I have nothing against short selling. But the way it has been abused in the last months HAS to be addressed...

Breaking News: SEC FINALLY Bans Naked Short Selling - Flytiger Vindicated

If the stock gaps down low enough, there will be buyers. So, for all those looking to stop shorting to prevent price discovery because they don't like the price that will be discovered, buckle your seatbelts.

Breaking News: SEC FINALLY Bans Naked Short Selling - Flytiger Vindicated

It will widen the spread - increasing transactions costs for everyone. So, it most certainly will have an effect on retail traders - they will be paying the market maker a lot more now. The guy who suggested trading in Europe is on to something.

Yes. And like most successful people, I didn't blame my failures on scapegoats.

Breaking News: SEC FINALLY Bans Naked Short Selling - Flytiger Vindicated

I can't think of one person for whom I have less respect. I purposely don't shop at Overstock because I can't stand pathetic, paranoid whiners whose sole purpose in life is to find a scapegoat on which to blame their failures. And, no, I've never shorted Overstock.
