    trading directly with a bank

I've been trading some forex with IB. You pay a commission (0.2 pips) but get the bid/ask from the best of several banks that quote. And one important advantage over trading with a single bank is that you can get price improvement. I had one limit order this week for AUD and it was filled 3...

    Historic Forex Data

Thanks for the MetaTrader tip. Although I can't use the charts for any real analysis, their demo includes a "History Center" that allows downloading of the chart data. I've been able to import it into Excel so will give it a try. The Pi Trading data sounds encouraging but unfortunately they...

    Historic Forex Data

Thanks but I'm looking for the actual data (i.e. rates). Not charts.

    Historic Forex Data

I'm looking for historic exchange rates on the major currencies. Not daily rates but rather hourly going back a few months. Does anyone know a source of this?

    IB p/l question

I'm not certain but you might check your page layout. For daily P/L you want "P/L". You might have "Unrealized P/L" instead which would be cumulative.

    IB Forex Tax Question

Thanks for comments. Sounds reasonable and you've fully disclosed everything.

IB: how to cancel trade permission of given market

Are you talking about a change to your market subscriptions? You can eliminate one of these. But I once tried to eliminate some permissions (I think it was options) and they said it couldn't be done.

    IB Forex Tax Question

Suppose during 2007 I purchased from my USD base currency account 100,000 Euro at a total cost (including commission) of $140,000. Later that same day I sell the 100,000 Euro for net proceeds of $141,000. Question 1 - Where on the IB tax forms does this transaction show up? Question 2 -...

    Pairs Trading Software

I've been pairs trading for a few years. It's not my main trading activity but something I do for some additional income. My positions start out very small (usually 100-200 shares on each side) and I frequenly add to losing positions. Most trades are open and closed in a single day. I've...

Is IB good to futures scalping?

As mentioned elsewhere, speed here in the U.S. is very good. What I have noticed with CME futures is that when placing an order at the market, my purchase is instantly shown in the data and the slight delay (I'm guessing less than 1/2 second) is in the order confirmation gettting from CME to...

IB margin interest, when is it charged?

No margin charge if you buy and sell on the same day.

    IB Margin?!

Try this link to an example of how margin is calculated by IB for forex. http://individuals.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/marginRequirements/margin.php?p=fx&ib_entity=llc

IB margin interest, when is it charged?

Well, not exactly based on the way I understand your question. Assume you buy stock on margin on Day 1 and sell it on Day 2. The stock purchase will settle on Day 4 and the stock sale will settle on Day 5. You will be charged margin interest for 1 day (or for 3 days if Day 4 is Friday and Day...

    What's better forex or futures??

I compared live quotes from one forex broker (no commission) to quotes from IB (charges commission) which come from participating banks. The forex broker's quotes were consistently 2 pips wider, one on each side. It was obvious that the broker could pass all orders directly through to a bank...

another reason IB is the pits

I've never found bonds to work well on TWS. Quotes move around or disappear on the page between settings, P/L is wrong, prices are off by a power of 10, etc. I have been able to buy and sell but bonds are clearly not stable. But of course, I've never reported it to IB, figuring that someone...

Tax implications for trading foreign markets?

As a general rule, any taxes that need to be paid on foreign stock transactions (including dividends), is withheld. That is, you don't need to file a tax return. These withholdings can then be taken as a tax credit on your U.S. return. So your total tax payments will be the same as if the...

Order executed over 4 minutes after close!

They weren't taking advantage of you. At least, no more than usual. It's the job of the specialist to match the buys and sells and to use their own funds or share inventory to maintain an orderly market. You can avoid this by not directing orders to the NYSE.

why aren't i getting filled in IB ?

Liquidity wouldn't matter. You would get a partial fill unless you indicated not to take partials.

Order executed over 4 minutes after close!

This does not sound like IB's fault at all. If you had cancelled the order a couple of seconds earlier, you would have seen red. You were just late enough that the NYSE specialist included your order in the final trade of the day. The pink indicated that IB sent the cancellation to the...

    Interactive Brokers fx NOT 24/7

IB doesn't make the market in Fx. They just report the best bid/ask from banks that participate in their Ideal Pro. I guess on some pairs this does leave some time holes. There should be some quotes for the pair on Ideal but these would be from individual traders.
