Preborrow requirements on FNM, FRE, Primary dealers.

IB has a real time system for tracking stock available for shorting. Seems to me this already meets the SEC requirement. Comments?

    Your Broker Is Your Enemy?

Common sense applies in the forex world. There's no such thing as a free lunch. I like IB for cash forex because 1) they don't take the other side of the transaction and 2) earn their money by commission rather than marking up/down the price. On a cross currency I frequently trade, IB's...

Boone Pickens:pumping His Own Energy Plan

Pickens doesn't need the money, nor will he likely be around to see the $ roll in from his wind farms. From what little I've heard, there's some sense to it all. P.S. I rented a car in Los Angeles last weekend and ended up with a Prius hybrid. My first time driving a hybrid and now I'm...

Fannie & Freddie are insolvent - Bill Poole (Fed)

Well, Jim Rogers was right again. He said a few years ago that FNM's financial statements made no sense and he was shorting it. As I recall he expected it to go to the teens at a time when FNM was in the 50-60 range. FNM and FRE will not go bust. If they did, the question wouldn't be...

    Interactive Brokers Data Fee?

I can't see why anyone would want to use IB if they're trading with only $500. But regardless, their business model isn't set up for small retail accounts and they're within their rights to pull the plug on such accounts. Please let us know if the SEC or your attorney decides to pursue the...

IB: Is there a way to prevent all orders to route to NYSE

The open isn't necessarily at 9:30am Eastern. It can take several minutes for a stock to open and some times as long as 15 minutes. Your stop order was probably activated and executed immediately after the opening trade.

How come I hear "more buyers than sellers" and vice versa?

I wouldn't take "more buyers than sellers" literally. It really means more demand than supply and an expectation of higher prices.

brokers' monitoring of customers' trading patterns

I'm not sure but it wouldn't surprise me. Several years ago a large broker was analyzing orders placed before the open by their customers. They used this to estimate the opening price, and when possible, to buy or sell in the pre-market to take advantage of this.

    Best Broker for Equity Trading?

I find the quality of IB's executions to be great. Limit orders routed to their primary exchange are often filled with price improvement. Same for forex.

Bad Advice, Retirement and your Mortgage

Making extra mortgage payments is equivalent to make a risk free investment. If your interest rate is low enough that you have better risk free alternatives, than clearly the math says to stretch out the payments. But what you haven't mentioned are the intangible benefits of paying off your...

Execute order at a specific time

The TIME IN FORCE order just means that the order will be submitted at the specified time, not that it will be executed. The order is still either Day or GTC, market or limit.

    newbie question about excution

I'll give you the general answer and let other's comment if there's something special I don't know about Ninja Trader. Your broker should have passed your limit order off to an exchange or market maker. So even if your or your broker's system is down, the order will be executed. If the...

    Margin requirements in long/short strategies

Yes, there most certainly is a margin requirement when you short stock. If the price goes up, the broker wants sufficient funds in your account to be able to buy the stock back. And if you can't cover a margin call, they will buy it back before you've run out of cash to do so. As to the...

    are they cheating on me?

What the high trade price was doesn't really mean anything in forex. What's important when selling is what the high bid was. It's possible that someone bought at the broker's ask price but the broker's bid price never got up your asking price. Keep in mind that a bucket shop doesn't match...

    Correlated Stocks?

It's a technique called "pairs trading". Go long with the stronger of the pair and short the other.

    IB currency question

You can withdraw funds so long as you have adequate margin. The analogy is if you bought stock with all of your Euros. If you have a margin account you can withdraw a portion of the stocks' value in cash. And yes, this would leave you with negative Euros for which you will pay margin interest.

IB TWS Not executing...once in a while

Does the order status go green? If so, your order has been routed to the market and it's out of IB's control.

    IB Forex order execution

If your order is not immediately marketable, IB will simultaneously keep your order for execution using IDEALPRO and make it available for execution on IDEAL. Your total commission is not affected and will be at the IDEALPRO rate. The advantage is that you may get some partial fill earlier...

    Skipping order preview with IB

Are you using TWS or the Web Trader? To configure Day vs GTC in TWS, go to CONFIGURE > ORDER > ORDER DEFAULTS and change the "Time In Force" box at the top. I've never seen order previews in TWS. They are optionally available in Web Trader.
