Broker's wash sales not calculated correctly

A update on the wash sales in the tax returns. I purchased a popular tax software for active traders. But it initially did not work out of box, as I had to manually adjust the trade records to make it work. A part of the problem is that some trades are a combination of open long and close short...

Broker's wash sales not calculated correctly

I purchased one of the two popular tax software for active traders, and it turns out to be a very bad experience. In my twenty years of professional experience, I have never seen such a piece of buggy, hard-to-use software. I have read the user manual, tried to work-around the bugs, in the end...

Botched 1099-B cost-basis reporting: The List

Thanks for this thread from 2012. My broker (IB) still screwed up my 8949 and 1099-B badly: first they could not generate any 8949 and 1099 until early Sept, and when they finally did, the wash sales were not treated correctly.

Broker's wash sales not calculated correctly

I have been reading everything I can find on wash sales and I hope to share what I learned so that the thread is beneficial for other ETers. Steve: Thanks. I agree that stop trading the same securities in Dec. is probably the best way to avoid the complication of wash sales. Say switch from...

Broker's wash sales not calculated correctly

Thank everyone for your inputs. Still digesting all the information.... Thank you and ET. Indeed the volume of my trades seem to have crashed the broker's tax software, as for several months they could not even generate a 1099-B for 2015 until a few days ago. The complexity of the wash sale...

Broker's wash sales not calculated correctly

I am an active trader and recently received the form 8949 from my brokerage account, but upon close look the wash sales do not seem correct. Hopefully someone will help me to understand better or confirm that indeed the brokerage made mistakes. The attached is a series of trades of qqq in the...

What I'm Struggling with - Execution of the Edge

I would automate as I find the execution becomes much easier this way. If you experience periods of losses, you can always blame your computer for the problem. Automation has its own problems (software bugs, data, or hardware), but it eliminates the problem of not pulling the trigger. Start...

The survive game of a system trader

Time to post to prove that I am still alive, I suppose. For 2015, the return was 12.98%. For the first half year of 2016 , the return was only 1.5%. I know it is not good but there are two footnotes. 1. There were several missed trades because of IB data issues (data missing or wrong data)...

31 of 33 large banks pass Fed's stress tests

If I remembered correctly, the first stress test for US banks was done in 2009 not in 2008 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Supervisory_Capital_Assessment_Program Each year the test is different. Now the question is whether the banks are too conservative as they either withdraw from or...

    Brexit

EU would likely set stiff conditions in the following-up negotiations with UK in order to set an example to deter other countries from following UK.

Did your data provider deliver yesterday?

Thanks. It's good to know someone has good experience with IB data. But do you use the API to get the data? I use API to get the data.

Did your data provider deliver yesterday?

Yesterday (the day of Brexit) IB did not have historical data for spy near the market close. Previously I had similar experience: the IB data (either market or historical) was not available when the market moved quickly. A data provider not delivering at a time when you need it most is not...

Does anyone here use a Xeon processor laptop or computer?

Actually my automated system is neither low-latency nor like running a large portfolio of securities. Still it took me a while to realize the 2-year old notebook was no longer suitable. A workstation is maybe an overkill, but still provides more reliability. How does one profile automation?

Does anyone here use a Xeon processor laptop or computer?

If there is a need to run an automated system on a laptop, then a workstation class one like the p-50 is worthwhile. I used to run an automated system on a notebook. In the first two years it was fine but it eventually become too slow and crashed too often so I had to switch to a workstation...

Does anyone here use a Xeon processor laptop or computer?

I bought a thinkpad about 1.5 year ago and was glad it did not have not many bloatwares. Xeon is more stable and more reliable and so is often used in servers.

Kyle Bass strikes again - UDF Down 55% FBI Raid

this from wiki: Fund performance Hayman Capital earned 212% in 2007 by shorting subprime. In the next 8 years the fund averaged 1.56% annualized. Hayman has gone through its ups and downs, but some of the downs have been significant. Bass' Macro Opportunities Master Fund went down 32% in a...

Should I buy CAD hedged ETFs when the Canadian dollar is weak?

I guess if you want to buy and hold sp500 for many years, it does not really matter whether you hedge currency risk or not. I do a lot of short term stuff, so currency hedging is important for me as I try to isolate the drivers of the results.
