    Plausible :-)

I sort of disagree. I mean, there have been plenty of instances where the small investor can blunder into a diversified bundle of assets (long), do nothing for 5 years, and come out looking like a champ. The end-of-the-world blow ups only happen about every 15 years, give or take, so, largely...

Well the question was about investment. Plenty of trades on the short side, if you're nimble & like to get up early.

Seeking advice on whether trading is appropriate for my situation

Take all the technical mumbo jumbo off you cv. Sadly tech is associated with low cost, replaceable foreign workers, and there is no way around this in today's western world. Get into any kind of sales job, some role where you sit between the customer and the bank. This is the only way to...

Behold,The Insatiable Rise Of HFT Quote Spam

Depends on where you sit. If you're selling product, yeah, low volume sucks. But if you're some retail punter, or retiree (the guys that are supposed to be protected) the current low fees and bull market are a dream come true. HFT spam has no relevance to that topic.

Split it between a few broad ETFs. Cheap to trade. Cheap to maintain. Mostly harmless and with zero rebalance work involved. => Hard to screw up.

And at the same time, commissions are at record lows, while the equity market fondles all time highs. Where is the problem?

Ernie Chan claims that statistical arbitrage is better than momentum like trend

I suspect you are correct. While I like his ideas, I think the tracking that he assumes will hold, is not stable enough to run successfully.

how many new strategies do you come up per year?

That's pretty interesting. I am curious as to whether there are certain patterns in the change-in-correlation that could lead that system to chase itself somewhat?

CalVolibrator, you seem to have a lot of knowledge in this area. What lead you to leave your desk, and what green pasture did you jump to?

If ET required you to use your real name, would you stick around?

I think there's some relevance in banning spot forex discussions. The barriers to entry are so low now that spot fx seems to attract any man on the street. And, the result is the average fx contributor is not adding much value to the board. I could say the same about technical analysis...

sounds like GS. They're sharp, but, increasingly, seems people are reluctant to deal with them in certain ways, products, arrangements.

Michael Lewis Article on Goldman and Serge Aleynikov

There are at least a couple of tier 1 banks that run tech in a similar way to how Michael Lewis describes Sergey's GS existence. A team of self professed HFT developer geniuses who never leave the back office. Work on behemoth global platforms handling DMA connectivity or fast market data. Guys...

Hmm, I am in a similar role currently. I think things may have changed post financial crisis. Perhaps the old world you worked in had budget for tech guys on the desk? It's "do it yourself" in my world. The alternative is to write a spec and wait for 3 months. Entirely hopeless.
