What is mechanical trading all about?

I will post it there, by the weekend. Thanks for the feedback.

What is mechanical trading all about?

Dear brethren: While I myself feel more inclined to the discretionary approach, as it is the path I have taken from the start, I would like to know the way the funds' machines are thinking. I guess the rules applied to mechanical trading have a predictive value given the amount of money...

    Is news necessary to trading?

Yeah. I feel there is a trade-off here. Prices diverging from or confirming news can be valuable technical clue. Nonetheless eventually you will get a little attached to the fundamental picture and sometimes will lose good opportunities. OPC

    Is news necessary to trading?

Have you ever read news in your trading experience before and how do you compare results? OPC

    Is news necessary to trading?

That's the way I had been using it, until my news source decided to raise the fees and provide only real time news. I feel I just don't need that. Technicals do a better work in analysing the short term picture. Does anyone know of a news provider, in a delayed basis, for market close reports...

    Is news necessary to trading?

Dear brethren: Do you think that reading news is an integral part of successful trading? Have you ever experimented with a pure technical approach, i.e., no news at all? OPC

    ORB, range contractions and expansions

Thanks, prox. That's the kind of feedback I was looking for. The idea about range contraction and expansion seems to be a little overdone nowadays. There seems to be a lot of hype attached to the concept. For those interested in the range contraction expansion issue, I would suggest Allan...

    ORB, range contractions and expansions

Thanks, mgkrebs. Doesn't Farley cover much of the subject about range contraction and expansion in his book "The Master Swing Trader"? Any difference to Crabel's ideas?

    ORB, range contractions and expansions

Anyone have a link to a pdf format of Crabel's book or articles about ORB? Would you be kind enough to PM me the link? Thanks. OPC

    ORB, range contractions and expansions

Dear brethren: "If the ducks are quacking feed them!" "The quiet before the storm..." I am not sure about how the old maxims relate to range contractions and expansions... After reading here and there some ideas about the ORB system, and how it's so popular among mechanical traders and...

    Trading with price action

Oops... I mean, any reasonable move will be preceded by a range contraction....

    Trading with price action

Basically it means that any reasonable move will be preceded by a sharp range expansion? It sounds like it's about the same approach used for options timing, isn't it? OPC

    Trading with price action

Would anyone mind to sum up the basics of expansion/contraction in range, as related to market trend forecasting? Actually my question is: how did Paul Tudor Jones put it? :) OPC

POLL: Your choice of a positive expectancy system

And to be honest with you Candle, my purpose is NOT to argue with you. I referred to you as Dr. Candle, as I acknowledge your valuable contributions to this board, and your expertise as well. OPC

POLL: Your choice of a positive expectancy system

POLL: Your choice of a positive expectancy system

I see your intent Dr. Candle. However given that the majority of ET members seem to be involved with very short term trading, I was anticipating a poll result of about 80% for option 2. OPC

POLL: Your choice of a positive expectancy system

Can we really separate the expectancy from the methodology? I mean, successful trading looks like managing expectations. Different methods have different expectations. OPC

    The Tao of Publias II

Taoism often refers to silence, in the sense of acceptance and responsiveness, as the source of enlightenment. But then if SILENCE and AGITATION are interdependent and complimentary to each other, how can Taoism be conveyed? May one ever interfere with the continuous grand flow so as to bring...

    Fear of loss of profit

I agree. In a way or the other it sounds like the trader will be always working with some kind of target. The range expansion might be just a target of another time frame. OPC

    Fear of loss of profit

The thread brings up an important issue: is it possible to combine target trading with a flexible attitude towards letting profits run? Or are we dealing with the old trader's dilemna of balancing risk and reward, and as such no theoretical answer can be found, only empirical? OPC
