    Comcast started throttling me!

Saw a couple things here that should be pointed out. Comcast has recently (last couple months) announced that they are now going to partner with P2P companies to provide better service for those customers using it for legit purposes...

New PC. What to do now?

I would say that this mentality applies to ALL Anti virus/malware/phishing software... However, I am realistic enough to realise that not everyone has the time to learn howto use thier computer properly so "helper" software is a necessity for most people. And I would also agree that McAfee...

    ram cache

basicly it is giving the option to store the frequently used data in memory (RAM cache) or on the hard drive (Disk Cache). You probably won't notice the difference as to browsing speed/functionality based upon RAM cache vs Disk cache. RAM cache will tend to be quicker but uses the...

    Dell Vostro's for Trading

8300 was never a gamer card. It was introduced about 6mo after the 8800 which has been nVidia's flagship product in every series of cards since the 6000 series... 6800, 7800 (and 7900), 8800, 9800 are/were all highend gamer cards... 6600, 7600, 8600, 9600 are/were all "budget" gamer...

    Dell Vostro's for Trading

For the record, I don't want to get roped into the "dell lover" crowd. If anything, I'm a "dell hater". There was a time when owning a dell meant something. You paid for top of the line quality and service. If someone paid the money for a dell, they wanted something reliable that they...

    Dell Vostro's for Trading

I agree with gnome on the price point of almost all dell rigs. Very seldom can you build the same box for the same price. Especially if you are looking at a sub-600$ rig. Of course we aren't talking about XPS systems, we are talking low-mid range systems. In the few cases where you are...

    Routers???

I won't ever purchase another Linksys or Cisco router again after the nightmare I had returning a bad one fairly recently (I actually had to end up calling the corporate office number in thier financial statement just to get them to send me "call tags" issued for routers they sent but had no...

    Networking problem....help

Sounds like one (or more) of the following: - Bad network cable (swap out with a different one that you know works for 100Mb) - Bad port on the router (switch to a port that you know is good) - Corrupted Network Card drivers (reinstall them if you feel comfortable, or if this is under...

Microsoft Manages To Make Visa Worse w/Service Pack 1 Release: Quite A Feat

minimum requirements for win98/ME was 16MB with 24 Recommended. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182751 Most will agree that back then, 64MB was "smooth sailing" and 128 was only for "power users". With XP, the minimum requirements were 64MB with 128 Recommended...

If You Use AIM Instant Messenger

Agreed. Personally I use Miranda IM. Not only is it free but it is also open source (not a huge selling point for many people, but it is for me). http://www.miranda-im.org/

Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan.

Not in the US. There isn't a sat provider in the US where you wouldn't be exceding your alloted bandwidth if you are always streaming thousands of symbols. Maybe if the ONLY information you are getting about those symbols is the last price, it might be possible but even then I would question...

    Keyboard/mice

I personally use 100% wired mice and keyboards... I've used wireless in the past and it just doesn't feel right...plus having to change the batteries in the middle of doing something important just sucks. Or forgetting to put yer mouse on the charger is even worse (since there is no...

    Strange video issue...

It sounds to me like the same thing that happens with some video cards when you have the default windows drivers installed for them. does it also scroll in IE "choppy"? Since you mentioned a 2nd video card, are you sure that you have the drivers installed for the 2nd card? But on the...

Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan.

yeah, yer right....I looked that number up instead of doing the conversion myself. I should have noticed it was off by so much. direct distance from NY to LA is about 2500 mi. 2500mi * 1.609344 km / mi = 4023 km = 4,023,000m which means that response time distance would be approx...

Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan.

it isn't. The only thing that satelitte internet has over "terrestrial" (for lack of a better word) internet services is that the range of service is absolutely HUGE. For example, most of the US can be serviced from a single satellite (assuming the satelitte could handle the bandwidth). If...

2 Different ISP's Simultaneously On One ADSL Line?

Having worked DSL tech support for a major internet provider, I would not recommend this. While it certainly is possible, many phone companies wont sell a "naked" dsl line (one with no dial tone). And even though we live in an internet society, many phone techs assume if a line doesn't...

Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan.

as other people have said, satilite internet service (and all other data transfer for that matter) is always going to have higher latency than cable/dsl. It is a simple matter of physics. Geosynchronous orbit (where the satelitte is) is about 35million meters above the earth's surface. All...

    Vista Service pack fix ?

I installed the Vista SP1 beta a few weeks ago on Vista Business 64. It does seem to be more stable but this isn't the "end all" of service packs like NTsp4, 98se, or XPsp2 were. Personally (running Vista on 3 PCs and XP on 4), I haven't experienced all the issues that most people say...

Trading Environment on Portable Hard Drive

one of the lesser known features of windows is hardware profiles... If you know which computer(s) you are going to be plugging into, you can setup a hardware profile for each computer. what you want to do is certainly doable....but it will be a hassle to setup and a bigger hassle to maintain.
