RA: Since VIX didn't go from 10 to 37 in a day, he should have plenty of time to adjust the risk even though it would mean a loss in the account. So it doesn't make sense to believe it blew up because of a change of vol.

    Buy or Sell Options?

There are many newsletters and many CTAs selling the idea of premium selling. It doesn't mean that the strategy gives you a better expectancy. In the long run, they are pretty much the same.

    Buy or Sell Options?

That is right. Let me make up a story. Suppose two weeks ago, I sold 10 open contracts of SPX 1550 for a credit of $3.0 and sold 10 contracts of SPX 1500 put for a credit of $2.00. Two days ago, I covered my SPX 1550 call at $10.00. CBOE will find 10 contracts of SPX 1500 Put at...

    Buy or Sell Options?

That is true. If you are not good at timing. Selling options might work for you as I mentioned in my last paragraph. Buying stocks will work for you too. I have nothing against selling options. I am mainly a premium seller.

    Buy or Sell Options?

Even 100% of options expire worthless, it means nothing. You might not make money selling options. Why? Most option sellers take a loss and cover their risky positions before expiration. For example, I sold SPX 1550 call early this month, now SPX is 1556. If I hold the contract, it will...

    Buy or Sell Options?

Not quite true. If you are good at 1, you should buy stock. 1+3, buy stock/option with margin, or use future (You can make money with selling options too, but it is better to long because the risk involvement) 1+2 (same as above, but don't use margin) 2+3, long gamma using options (not...

Goldman´s daily trading VaR rose to $139 million in the third quarter

If they think 7% movement happens only once every 100 years, there is something wrong with their basic statistics.

Do you think they are too conservative? VaR is too small imo.

    SPX Credit Spread Trader

Mark, I am glad you are still around. I had a Nov/Oct 890/850 RUT call opened at a credit of $0.5, and I understood that I might have the biggest profit with this position (the current MTM is at a loss of $3.5) I wish it will settle at 850, but now the delta is getting too big when it...

    Options Mentoring

No. Once you change your exit strategy, you lower the chance of winning. If you buy/sell at a "fair value", you have zero expectancy. A combination of positions with zero expectancy will give you a zero expectancy. Simple Math. Good trading and learning to everyone.
