Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

It takes about 5 years to change one of those statements. The brouhaha at the APS continues. Journalists and public employees tend to be leftists and you can expect them to trail the crowd. The Scientific American is a big supporter of the Alarmist view. Here's their reporting on the APS fight...

    For Profit Colleges

xandman, I'm in (public) academia now. That it's a bubble is well known to some of the people in it. I was loaned this book a few months ago: The Higher Education Bubble Glenn Harlan Reynolds In this Broadside, Glenn Harlan Reynolds explains the causes and effects of this bubble and the steps...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

I tend to be somewhat cynical about the Press, but they have a vicious shark instinct that eventually seems to overcome their political bias. Look at what the NY Times is doing to Hillary. Of course there could be a little Obama vs Clinton going on there but still. Among my friends, the only...

Do you buy sports tickets? You are flagged as a rogue trader

Whew! I guess I'm okay. All I have are cheap season tickets for the local college football team.

    For Profit Colleges

The ability of students to get jobs drastically depends on what they're studying. In my years as an engineer I worked with a lot of technicians and a lot of them were trained at "for profit" 2-year colleges. But even the 2-year colleges that have a long history of feeding industry (like ITT...

Open options help needed-father recently passed and open options in one of his accounts

The broker will have a phone number where you can call in trades. Have your mother call them up and the magic words she needs to utter are "please liquidate all my open positions at the market". This should be done about an hour after the market opens in the morning; options are very weird in...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

There are many temperature records (estimates of the earth's average air temperature). They can get their predictions to barely stay within the 2SD level by carefully choosing which record to compare with. Of course they use the temperature records which global warming alarmists have full...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

Of course they're using ocean temperature records because their predictions of the air temperature records failed miserably. And the ocean temperatures are impossible to determine accurately (and yet the heat content of the ocean is far greater than that of the air). Nice to see the Duke...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

I didn't say that there was a "pause in the heat gain". I said there was a pause in the temperature rise. The fact that you don't know the difference but are still willing to debate the subject is hilarious! But the heat gain arguments are a retreat from the claims of the past 30 years. Before...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

No it's not. If it were a lot, temperatures would be rising at the same rate they did between 1970 and 1990. Instead, we have a "pause". The world production of grain is about 160 Hiroshima bombs per second. I guess that's why we're getting so fat, LOL. WW2 lasted something like 8 years and...

UK trader arrested for May 2010 U.S. Stock market flash crash

The funny thing is that the illegal part wasn't the big spoof orders. It was the little ones (where he made his profits).

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

What they didn't say was that 4 Hiroshima bombs per second is diddly squat compared to the heat exchanged on the earth by natural processes. It's easy enough to rewrite the units so that the number becomes extremely small. And people aren't stupid. The Hiroshima bomb statistic makes the...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

When the scientists start using "Hiroshima bombs" as a unit of measurement, they've drifted out of science and into politics. Of course the sunshine contains energy and it shines all over the earth. So let's put this number in perspective. How many Hiroshima bombs does the sun send to the...

Heat goes on: Earth headed for warmest year on record

CO2 is a greenhouse gas. We have raised it's[sic] levels by 40%. It does cause warming. What's under debate is how much warming it causes.

UK trader arrested for May 2010 U.S. Stock market flash crash

That was a fascinating read. I'd say they've got him cold; having your broker implement a function which keeps orders out of the market, LOL.

Regarding "Few get a consistent 20%/year."

It's not surprising that few money managers have enough talent to make 20% per year for very long. Someone who can make that sort of return quickly ends up with more money than they can easily invest. For them, signing up to invest other people's money is stupid because it means that the...

Regarding "Few get a consistent 20%/year."

A human generation is something like 25 years. Assuming that you have 2 kids each generation, the number of descendants after 2000 years is 2^(2000/25) = 2^80 = 1.2x 10^24. In other words, after 2000 years, your descendants could easily be more than half the entire world.

MCD is in big trouble. May not exist in 5 years

Do they publish how much of their revenue is from breakfast lunch and dinner? I can recall when they didn't offer breakfast. Now I think it's their best effort.
