What happened to Hugh Hendry when he made right bullish call and yet lost so much money?

I looked at the factsheet closer. He did lose some money. -4.4% this year when global markets are booming. -6.4% over 5 year period. I would expect better performance since he got his macro-call right since 2013. His under-performance is a mystery.

What happened to Hugh Hendry when he made right bullish call and yet lost so much money?

I got my facts wrong. I jumped to the wrong conclusion by assuming he must have lost lots of money because he had to close his fund. I tried to edit my original misleading post and title but unable to do so now.

What happened to Hugh Hendry when he made right bullish call and yet lost so much money?

Since Hugh Hendry's success in 2008, he became a perma-bear until 2013 when he turned bullish. It was the right macro call, yet he lost so much investors' money over the years and ended up closing his fund in 2017. How can a hedge fund manager lose so much money despite being right? I am really...

Any downside to using hidden stop orders?

Thanks for your answer. I read somewhere that stop orders sent to the exchange can be seen by market makers and market-making algorithms. So, off-exchange hidden orders would keep the visibility away from market makers. As you have highlighted, using off-exchange hidden orders expose us to the...

Any downside to using hidden stop orders?

I would like to use Interactive Brokers to set hidden stop orders for stock index futures. I found out that this feature is available on TWS. https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=596 I am wondering if there are any downside to using this feature. If there are no downsides, wouldn't...

How do you rank as a trader?

This applies to all entrepreneurial activity. Entrepreneurs can sweat and bleed profusely, yet have nothing to show at the end of the day. Those who love only the money but not the process of working for that money will most likely fail.

How do you rank as a trader?

If someone makes >80% return on capital per year, it certainly makes them the top 10%. My experience is that when someone is harping on this wonderful result, he is going to sell me his trading course which will make me rich like him. (Truth is, it is going to make him richer than me for sure...

    Lessons Learned

From the article, the ironic thing about the trend-following strategy failing is that the failing fund managers continue to attract money inflows from investors. What lesson can we draw from this weird behaviour from investors? In the work-place, poor performers get sacked. Why not in the money...

    Lessons Learned

Trend following has stopped working for many hedge funds and CTAs in recent years according to recent news reports.

Quant funds having a bad year in 2017. Trend-followers may not survive

You make a good point. Trend following is not a scalable strategy. This may be why the professionals have problems making money off it today because they are managing too much money.

Quant funds having a bad year in 2017. Trend-followers may not survive

Have you thought about what signal to look out for when trend following cease to work? Series of losses?

Quant funds having a bad year in 2017. Trend-followers may not survive

If it happens to one or two, it's understandable. But it seems to happen to too many at the same time. Something is wrong fundamentally with their investment strategy. Or something has fundamentally changed in the market that caused their strategy to fail.

Baron: New users who are not traders, but trolls.

There are many traders who become "mental hospital patients" because they lost tons of money. So, they hope the world will come to an end and everyone will lose money like them. Schadenfreude. If you want to irritate them, you can ask them a simple question "Did you lose a lot of money?"

Baron: New users who are not traders, but trolls.

The easiest way to deal with troll is to ignore them. They yearn attention. Deny them attention and they will disappear. If you have to reply, simply label them as troll and stop at that. Don't feed the troll.

Quant funds having a bad year in 2017. Trend-followers may not survive

Many of the quant funds mentioned in this Bloomberg article are into equities. Why is it so hard for them to make money in a bullish year? Hasn't it been said that a rising tide lift all boats? Shouldn't even idiots perform well in 2017? Why can't these geniuses do much better? Lazy "idiots" who...

Did you make more money on the long or short side trading index futures?

The trend on the way down is usually much choppier than trend on the way up. Looks to me much harder to make money.
