The 3 biggest mistakes people make on RISK

When you take big risks at 20 years old and lose everything, you lose thousands. It isn't so bad because you can still find a stable job and recover from the loss. When you take big risks at 70 years old and lose everything, you lose millions. To make matters worse, at that age, you're probably...

AliBaba Files For A Hong Kong Listing!

luisHK, 30% witholding tax apply for U.S stocks on U.S exchanges but don't apply to ADRs. No 30% withholding tax for BABA. Otherwise, Jack Ma would not have listed his company in U.S. It will be very dumb of him to be taxed 30% to collect dividends from his own company.

AliBaba Files For A Hong Kong Listing!

It's not about U.S investors or Asian investors. Any retail investor with access to both U.S and HK stock markets will choose U.S markets to avoid paying 0.1% stamp fee to the Hong Kong government. Why throw your money away on stamp fees to the HK government? I believe even HKers themselves will...

AliBaba Files For A Hong Kong Listing!

Hong Kong is not a competitive stock market compared to U.S for retail investors. If I can buy AliBaba on U.S exchange with zero financial transaction tax, why buy the same AliBaba on Hong Kong Stock exchange which charges 0.1% stamp fee? Why pay the stamp fees unnecessarily? Brokerage fees for...

Futures are regulated and are more transparent. CFDs are not regulated, higher risk of getting screwed by brokers. Risk of getting screwed by CFD brokers is particularly high if brokers are on the opposite side of the trade and don't do enough hedging. CFD brokers using DMA (direct market...

Superstar Neil Woodford suspends redemptions. What risk management mistakes did he make?

Good point. Liquidity mismatch is one of the risk management mistakes he made. I wonder if he breached certain rules regarding the maximum percentage that unlisted assets can occupy in his portfolio. He can be sued by clients unless the fund prospectus clearly state the risk faced by clients...

Never tell a broker you trade for a living?

For full-time traders, there seems to be some worry in saying one is a self-employed trader. If that's the case, I guess they can simply say they are self-employed freelancers in some creative arts or write software instead even though they may spend more time on managing their money.

25% tariff on goods coming in from Mexico announced

I thought there is a trade agreement between U.S and Mexico called NAFTA? What's the point of having a trade agreement when one side can arbitrarily impose tariffs? Does this trade agreement carry no legal effect? Wouldn't U.S lose trust among friends and potential friends? Who will dare do...

Any good reason to use index CFDs given the emergence of E-micros? Are index CFDs obsolete?

Thanks for your reminder about CFDs being bucket shops. Fortunately, there are CFDs who uses DMA(Direct Market Access) model. These aren't bucket shops. I use IBKR CFDs because they use DMA, if I have to trade CFDs.
