Ask? I do not recall Etrade Canada being flexible in this matter. When I tried to discuss with them why the spread was so high, I was told that they are not a bank. Which broker has these rules? Do you always have to ask or there is a "flag" on your account on this?

    confused about e-mini margin requirements

You have to have the margin specified to open the position (and the maintainance margin available until you keep it open). Some brokerags offer "day" margins (about 1/2 (?) of the exchange margin).

So every time you open/close a US position pay the high (at Etrade Canada I was quoted almost 2%, worse than bank already high bank spreads ...) USD-CAD spread? As by the rules RRSP account cannot be kept in USD. %2+2%+1%=5% those seem to be some nicely working swing trades :)

    Day Trading Canadian Stocks

really the only reason to trade Canadian stocks (considering how thin and mostly low quality the market is and how high the brokerage fees are) is because RRSP rules for investments require Canadian content. Otherwise just go with the US markets at http://www.interactivebrokers.ca/
