Do I Need to Hire a Fundamental Analyst?

Some of these types of stocks were down 50% or more in 2008. Holding through a period like that only makes sense if you buy high quality names at a discount and hold them for a very long interval (much longer than 3 years). The stocks you are talking about are not high in quality. Healthy...

Do I Need to Hire a Fundamental Analyst?

Rufus, we have been in a bull market. You need to backtest your strategy through times like 2008 and 2002, or else figure out a workable filter to avoid being in the market at those times. Buying dividend stocks on pullbacks is a good strategy in a bull market. Right now, those with 6%...

Trumps Next Target Industry to Short....(Drumroll Please)

Things are going to go better for Trump if he gets Mexico to cooperate with some of his wishes. The Mexicans seem willing....how about long Mexico? Their stocks are pretty beat up. I think something new will happen in the upcoming negotiations. Mind you, I'm just shooting my face off, not...

    Mylan

There are real risks when the government is mad at you and thinks you might lie. It's hard to get anything through FDA under those circumstances. They need to change out the C-suite.

    Protecting a DITM call spread

This is well covered in McMillan's big book, where he describes about 4 ways to deal with this. There is no one best way.

Madoff cornered the prison's hot chocolate market

Can't wait for the movie. Will be sure to order a hot chocolate at the concessions stand before it starts.

Former Turtle Trader and ET Member in Jail?

I'm sorry to hear about it. His first book really helped me. I suspect: 1. Faith was probably never a nice person to be around, both by his own admission in the book and based on the tone of the book and the content of subsequent online interviews and writings in which he profanely and...

    Rip VW a new one

This goes on and on--from shitty brakes on the Citation to the accelerator pedals on the Japanese models. Maybe all car makers are crooks until proven otherwise. I don't care what happens to any of them. I don't ever touch their stocks. And what we are talking about here are only the things...

IB long wait time to get help

I have never experienced that kind of wait with them in 10 years, even at times of high volatility. Weird--what is going on? Did everyone make a New Years resolution to trade? (that would be great for us, huh?)

Your ratio of technical vs fundamental analysis for your trading

For an ETF, it's mostly technical. For an individual stock that I am thinking of holding for the long term, it's mostly fundamental and driven by value, company debt, and industry (I don't usually invest in anything I consider a secularly declining or stagnant industry).

U.S. Kids Keep Getting Dumber; Ranked 31st Of 35 Developed Nations In Math, New Study Reveals

We are importing smart people from Asia by the bucketload, here in Seattle. Not enough Americans learn how to do these techy things. Primary and secondary schools are inferior in many neighborhoods. I travel frequently by car and usually stay in a Hampton, Hilton, or Hyatt. Nearly every...

How Liquid are SPY options, and options in general in comparison to securities?

No, limit. I guess I usually trade in the money, though. So I stand corrected.

    ATM options for premium decay

The equity indexes have two nice built-in features: 1. A long-term upward bias 2. Overpriced puts Therefore, if you do income trades only when there is no major fiasco going on, you may be able to make a bit of income. You'll still have plenty of losers, so it's important to manage your...

How Liquid are SPY options, and options in general in comparison to securities?

I respectfully disagree; the spreads are better on SPY. Whether that's better for you or not depends on number of contracts and commission rates.

How Liquid are SPY options, and options in general in comparison to securities?

They may be very liquid but it depends on which options you want to trade. If you are very far in or out of the money they are less liquid. Take a look at the open interest and the spreads to get an idea. I assume you don't want to day trade anything like that, though. It is important to be...

Future of sports betting: the marketplace

Yes, I agree. Given the time he was putting in, I doubt that he made much per hour getting that car. But he had fun doing it.

Future of sports betting: the marketplace

I know someone who bought a Mercedes by betting on football, $200 or $300 at a time. He watched all the games, followed the injury list, etc. It's labor intensive but possible.
