Look at the energy stocks and keep up a chart of crude futures. Also look at other stocks in sector for direction. If trading BP look at XOM, if trading BTU look at other coals like MEE.

I personally would hold any stock for 30 years. As a trader my mindset just will not allow for it. If I was looking to hold for huge upside, it would have to be in small to midcaps.
