You might want to look into the Solvay Conferance of 1927, Its where Scientific Realism got decided as the path forward science in favor of Instrumentalism. Scientific Realism got us (useless?) string theory instead of having flying cars by instrumentalism.

TA traders can use simple models too. Both are trying to describe unobservable reality, in different layers of abstractions.
