Great. Honestly though, it's such a simple task I would have never assumed it's not already available as a feature of some compression utility. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys.

    moving zipped files

At the risk of sounding really stupid - wouldn't that still involve the step I'm trying to avoid? By "merely need to extract" you mean it would still be decompressed first and then compressed when moved to the new archive, right? Thanks for the advice guys. I've certainly learned more about...

    moving zipped files

This seems like the way to go. Thanks CalTrader. Honestly, it's a bit beyond my techie knowledge, but generally I understand the idea. My wife will fill me in on the execution details, she's much better trained to do such things. :D Thanks a bunch!

    moving zipped files

Thanks! That's the very first thing I tried. The problem is when you drag and drop or move the files from zip file 1 to zip file 2, the files actually first get unzipped and put into a temp location and then zipped back and moved to zip file 2. That's why it takes forever :(

    moving zipped files

So I thought! Now I AM amused. Seems the only thing of are capable of doing is typing (skipping the thinking part, it appears). Welcome back to my ignore list. Cesko et al on it felt lonely without you :D

    moving zipped files

You find it amusing? OK, here's my offer, I'll take your posts more seriously if you suggest a way one can move a file from an archived directory to another archived directory without unzipping/rezipping it. Let's see who'll be the amused one in the end.

    moving zipped files

OK, I just tried it. I seems to work a bit faster than what I did before (with Windows Commader), but still, it first unpacks the files into a temp directory and them packs them to the destination you specify. I'll play with it a bit more but it seems the unpack/pack thing is unavoidable...

    moving zipped files

Great! Thanks Dojibear, I'll try that in a sec. I did think of using smth like Norton Commander or Volkov Commander but decided it wouldn't work when I encountered problems doing it in DOS. One complication I see right now is that the person who put those files on CDs gave the achived...

    moving zipped files

Thanks for your suggestions. The thing is if I did what you suggest - "then open them" that in itself takes forever and is what I'm trying to avoid. I'll have to think about Access idea. The thing is I need to have all those files together in a single directory so I can run my program on them...

    moving zipped files

When I first saw: "This person is on your Ignore List. To view this post click [here]" I was a bit hesitant to view your post. Having clicked on it, I see I was entirely correct assuming you'd not contribute anything worthy. Yes, I CAN run sophisticated programs on more data then you ever...

    moving zipped files

Thanks again TGregg. Basically what happened is the person who arranged them on CDs first put a number of individual text files into a directory/folder and then zipped that folder. Let me try something to see if it works. I appreciate your help. Vladimir.

    moving zipped files

Thanks TGregg. I'm afraid that won't work for what I'm trying to do. I guess I did a bad job explaining the situation. Here's another attempt :D I have a large number of text files (containing intraday trades data) that I would like to all be on the external drive in a single zipped...

    moving zipped files

Hey guys, this is probably a dumb question, but what can I say, sleep deprivation catches up with ya... Hope someone has an efficient solution for this: I have about 100 gigs of data that are arranged in zipped folders on CDs. I need to take all the text files that are zipped in those folders...

    short interest data

Thanks! And thanks for the warning. That was some serious pop-up attack! :D This source is great although it's only for nasdaq and goes back only 12 months. I'll probably contact them and see if I can buy data going back further (if they keep it). Any other places I might wanna check? TIA.

    VBA question

I figured out a "round and about" way to get what I need, but still, curios if I was wrong in assuming all excel function could be used in VBA. I've used a whole bunch before and this is the first time I that I came across smth that's not working. Thnx.
