    Effectiveness of Candlestick bars...

Your response was too funny. In my early days of trading, I thought that I might have found the "Holy Grail" in candlesticks. You know, something about that Asian mystique. I bought Nison's book (Pring's, too) and started out on my quest only to discover that they had NO predictive value...

Is this silly or what. am I supposed to help an automator to put me out of work?

It's funny that you should bring that up. I thought I was a fairly decent chess player until I played the chess game on my new iMac. I haven't beaten the computer yet. Thankfully trading IS easier than chess.

Is this silly or what. am I supposed to help an automator to put me out of work?

Automation will never replace me! Who would ever invent a machine that did absolutely nothing :D In all seriousness, I don't think that I "worked" a day in my life. I've been lucky enough to do what I loved and often shook my head at the realization that "They're actually paying me MONEY to...

    Total beginner looking for advice

Steve, Stocks for investing may be different from stocks selected for trading. Another point to consider is that investing books stress the importance of diversifying as part of a risk management plan. For practical purpose however, this simply isn't possible unless you are wielding...

    Total beginner looking for advice

I don't mean to turn this thread into a discussion over the virtues of options. Perhaps Steve has enough capital to employ my favorite "lower risk" strategy, the covered Call. I enjoy taking in the premium rather than spending it.

    Total beginner looking for advice

Burnout was the reason for my making the transition, too. If I had felt appreciated at my job, I might never have left :) They did me a favor actually. Let me add this for our new trader. Take the time to learn about options and the various risk managing benefits they provide. I would...

5 days before the election- Jobs report

Yes, you are correct. Another problem I see is that we are teaching to the lowest common denominator..."No child left behind". In her book, "The Case Against Lawyers", author Catherine Crier talks about the legal perversion of education. You might find the entire book very interesting. I...

5 days before the election- Jobs report

I've often wondered if our failing education system is one way of maintaining control over our own people. I can see a political advantage to having an ignorant population to work with. Give "Al Bundy" a six pack and put him in front of the "game" on TV and he is a happy man. Life is good.

Maverick, That was very well put and right on the mark!

5 days before the election- Jobs report

World economic centers have shifted all through history. It's unrealistic to expect that the US will keep her privileged position forever. No outside force will make that happen either. We will slowly rot out from the inside. Our debt will be a player. Declining education in the general...

5 days before the election- Jobs report

What percentage of those eligible to vote does that represent, when you say most voters. Less than half? A sad situation when the remaining 50% of us who do vote are so equally divided.

    S&P has topped for 2006

If you are determined to sell your longs tomorrow, consider selling covered Calls against your long shares instead. You may be able to enjoy a higher selling price while allowing for downside protection through the premium you collect. If you believe we may REALLY tank, pick a strike price...

    S&P has topped for 2006

I think you are right on that advice. He put out some stuff about AAPL a few month ago...how it would never regain its' lofty highs. Of course it soared not long after that. These Schaefer tidbits are a free (basic) service through my online broker. I'm getting what I'm paying for. One...

    S&P has topped for 2006

I wouldn't quibble over semantics if it could be true:D Does anyone track Bernie Schaefer? I get some of his stuff (mostly ads). He's trying to make the argument that the S&P will breakout to the upside very soon...maybe within 2006.

National Foreclosures Increase 17 Percent in Third Quarter

You are comparing the US citizen to a mindless puppet? Maybe we Americans aren't the sharpest knives in the global drawer (our test scores prove that), but we still have the right to do as we choose whether or not we have the intelligence to do so responsibly. Here we all are, viewing a...

"The China Price" - The best business article I have seen in years.

&search I don't worry about it much anymore as I have no control over any of it. The Chinese do a good job. The last time I was upset over a product and its' source was soon after 9/11. The company I worked for then lost two aircraft that day. Soon thereafter shirts began to appear in...

National Foreclosures Increase 17 Percent in Third Quarter

Doesn't anybody take responsibility for their OWN actions anymore? Noooo! We have to shift the blame to "the powers" and make these "poor people" hapless victims. C'mon now. We have the right and freedom to choose and with these rights come responsibilities. No way around it.

National Foreclosures Increase 17 Percent in Third Quarter

I've been reading through these comments and yours is the first one that says it like it is. Who's fault is it for taking on adjustable rate loans or no interest loans? Where's the responsibility for these actions? Too bad, so sad.

Core 2 Duos - Laptop vs Tower

My solution to the problem was to buy an Intel dual core iMac with a 20" screen...it's offered now with a 24" screen. These screens are wide enough to view 2 displays (or even 3 in the case of the new 24" cinema screen) at the same time. They are even (arguably) transportable because the works...

    Following or Predicting

The big institutions hire droves of technical analysts in the hopes that managed funds will beat the returns of the "lowly" index funds. They (the managed funds) only rarely accomplish that goal. So ah, how come is that? Could it be that technical analysis has NO predictive value whatsoever?
