Trade all day or stop once a $Target or $Loss is hit?

Thanks all - particularly VSTscalper and aeliodon for the other thread. Good stuff...

Trade all day or stop once a $Target or $Loss is hit?

I've been trading for years and still have this burning question in the back of my head. In general, is it better to trade all day long until the closing bell or is it better to stop once your P&L hits a certain gain or loss for the day? To put some numbers to the question, suppose your goal...

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

Nice job apex! That's a beauty of a curve. Looks like you average 25 trades per day and $333 profit per trade. Care to shed any light on what your are doing and how many contracts you trade at a time? I hope to be at this level some day!

Sorry - I forgot some people have REAL jobs. :D

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

Frost, since you discovered bot wasn't trading early this morning, couldn't you have corrected the code and activated mid-morning? Or even still, why not just trade the signals mechanically? Do you have the ability to do this if/when needed?

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

An old thread I came across is a great read. When to activate/deactivate a system. If you need to deactivate at some point Frost, make it an OBJECTIVE decision. Good luck this week...

    Point Break Charts

I just started some trading today with these charts and if you see page 1 of post I've only looked at past 16 days backtesting all signals. Would you consider any of these days "choppy"? The one bad day 11/16 was down -$1458 but there were 3 days equal or better than this on profit side...

    Point Break Charts

Thanks JJ. I'm still playing around with this but really like it so far. I'm not using trailing stops yet but will look into this. I'm finding that by trading 2 contracts and taking 1 off at 10-20 ticks profit, and letting the other ride until signal reverses seems to work well. But I've...

    Point Break Charts

Yes I used $6 per trade commission. But I don't use 1 tick slippage per trade - far too high. I base slippage estimate on where the next bar trades. Say I am to enter trade at close of Bar 0. I would put a limit order in AT that price. If next bar trades at least 1 tick lower than Bar 0...

    Point Break Charts

Attached is today's chart so far today. A very nice profitable move today for 7 pts. But I got out early for just 4.5 I think this strategy can be very successful intraday but one has to fine tune what chart period (1 min., 3 min., 10 min., etc.) works best for them. The question I am...

    Point Break Charts

Good one Nazz - sometimes I feel like I'm parachuting without a parachute! Point Break is also sometimes called 3 Line Break - google either and you'll find tons of material. From 1 website: "Three line break charts on the other hand usually help traders more accurately determine the...

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

Frost, You already know this but just to remind you it is pointless to compare P$L each day for each of your systems. You'll drive yourself crazy! The fact that System #2 lost less $$ today is meaningless. Keep the bigger longer-term picture in mind. Compare weekly performance of each...

    Point Break Charts

No feedback yet huh? Perhaps the attached will peak your interest. I've only backtested 15 days but it looks nice to me. I did realize the chart posted above was an exceptionally good day. Maybe nobody uses this type of chart to trade with? Or you don't have it available with your...

    Point Break Charts

I've been experimenting with Point Break charts and wondered who else is using them? And how do you use them? They seem to provide some great entry signals and capture the meat of any moves. Early exits seem required for any choppy days however but preliminary backtesting shows great...

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

If $44 is about right for your system per contract I guess I'm not far off. My average is $38 per trade (1 contract). Your P&L overall is much higher due to 4 trades per day, vs. my 1. Curious how much commission did/do you figure in per roundtrip? I use $6.

Frosty's auto-trading bot goes live with REAL money

Frost, I just caught up with your thread and find it interesting in that I too have been trading a counter-trend ER2 system that makes no trades before 9:00am Central time. However my system (which is not automated) only places 1 trade per day but only trades about 85% of days. Your system...

    Simple Profitable Method

Apologies if this is covered in pages 1-156 somewhere but I'd like to solicit some opinions on what filters people are using with this method. Although I agree with the KISS method and don't want to complicate, various traders have noted that they do not take every signal and some discretion...

    Will this ER2 system work?

Thanks but you're missing something or I don't understand what your saying - I've been trading it since 2/27/06. The period from 12/11/03 until 2/27/06 was the backtest period and is optimized (see PDF file on page 1 of this thread). Since 2/27, results are actual. No 2nd optimizations have...

    Will this ER2 system work?

Thanks stacked! I wish I had the time/wisdom to help you out more. (even though you said you were joking)... I do all my backtesting in Excel. Manually going through historical charts and recording different variables. Yes very time consuming... I should learn TradeStation and try to...

    Will this ER2 system work?

Actually biggest drawdown to date is $2400 per contract. I hear ya though - I just wish my other trading hadn't sucked up most of my $7k gain. Hopefully I can get up to trading 2 contracts soon w/o worrying about double the volatility in the equity curve. The real question is what is...
