Yes, you are correct. I was under the impression that he equate that to more general than it really is. It does depend on r/r and what trades you are on.

That's one of the reason I don't particularly like SPX (too much slippage on adjustments)and trade the RUT instead. Not perfect, but tighter b/a. Of course, percentage wise it is more volatile.

If you are fully expecting an IV spike during Jan or Feb, then you should long those straddle for those contract months. However, you will be subject to -theta and taking on delta risk as well. That's why Phil sells some near month contracts to take in premium to finance his APR contracts...

I would agree if you are doing it with the goal of balancing out a portfolio. But the post I was alluded to was XLE, and strictly from a standpoint of that underlying, it does not stay in a range condusive for chasing it with adding calendar spreads seemingly when they are at the most premium...

The only fallacy I see with that is you are paying close to the highest for that calendar at y. Now it will be ok if the underlying stays at or around y at expiration. If not, you'll have to close the calendar at y for a lot less when the underlying move away from y back to x or beyond...

If the underlying doesn't move around too much, then yes it is conceivable. It is more of a theta play.

This strategy is not feasible in a Reg-T account.... very margin intensive at the beginning, and when you long stock.

There is no such thing as a "rule" per se, as it is more dependent on your view of the underlying. In your multiple calendar setup you will want the underlying to be as close to the middle strike as possible on exp. Theta gain should negate gamma risk in that position.

What rally meant was that with the drop on Wednesday, OTM Calls got more OTM and therefore gamma decreases due to the underlying moving further away from the strike. If you sell a call spread right after a drop like that, it is not condusive to your ultimate P/L as you are picking up pennies...
