Dare to contradict. Better blow up small than big. Learning curve there is more vivid. A point more concerning here is that he's trading and don't even knows what the regular margin and rt-fees with his particular broker are.

Had my first trade today and played ES. +200 net and the account stands now at 1,840.

Not going to lose this money hehehe. Your situation is more difficult in my view as you'll have to stick with 1 lot for many trades which makes it vulnerable to trade management mistakes.

300 margin is if you accept paying a rt fee of 9.56 net. I don't like the YM and think that NQ or ES are much easier to trade. With his account and trading platform only futures can be executed so options are out of question.
