Lost 78% within 1 week of purchase of Russian equity fund. My after-thoughts.

I'm worried about asset confiscation by the Russian government in retaliation. It doesn't matter whether an investment is a good one or not if it's going to be confiscated.

Lost 78% within 1 week of purchase of Russian equity fund. My after-thoughts.

It was a small position because it was a trade that was against my usual rules of not buying when the trend is down. The already small position was already cut by 85%, followed by another big cut by Mr Market. Hence, what's left is too little to make much difference whether I sell or not. Thanks...

    Market observations and actions

For those with a weaker heart, lower volatility may not be a bad thing. If a trader could master S&P500 futures, that would be ideal but I think it is too competitive. The lesser known ones may be easier to trade, thanks to fewer elitetraders taking the lunch away.

Lost 78% within 1 week of purchase of Russian equity fund. My after-thoughts.

Mr Market has cut down on what is left it's so little to the extent that selling makes very little difference now.

Lost 78% within 1 week of purchase of Russian equity fund. My after-thoughts.

I agree with you on not going against the trend. In fact, this is one of my rules. I knowingly broke the rule this time because 45% down on a single day for a stock index full of value stocks should be quite safe to enter, particularly if one doesn't mind holding for a long time. The outcome...

Lost 78% within 1 week of purchase of Russian equity fund. My after-thoughts.

I'm sharing this bad experience and my after-thoughts with elitetraders. I would like to hear your thoughts too. I bought a Russian equity fund(see this post on Elitetrader) more than a week ago when the Russian MOEX stock index crashed over 40% in a single day after Russia invaded Ukraine...

    Market observations and actions

The highlight of this week has to be the Russian-Ukraine war which crashed global markets. The stock market and forex market are telling us that the biggest loser in the Russian-Ukraine war is the war aggressor who started the war - Russia. Year-to-date, the biggest stock index loser is...

Risk management guru Van Tharp has passed away

My condolences to Van Tharp and his family. https://www.vantharp.com/trading/van-turns-to-light/ Van Tharp's books are must-reads for the topic of risk management. Risk management is a topic that should be learnt before traders/traders think about making money from the markets. It is a...

Straits Times Index resilient this week despite war jitters. Oil-producing countries have become global stock leaders. 18Feb2022 Singapore Straits Times Index(STI) remains resilient in a week rocked up and down by Russian-Ukraine war jitters. It is the market leader among Asian stock markets...

    Market observations and actions

Made a mistake in my calculations for USD-adjusted year gain for Straits Times Index(STI). The correct year-to-date gain for STI is 9.94%, not at the lower 9.6%, thanks to the stronger Singapore dollar (SGD) against USD. A stronger currency versus USD this year is exceptional performance since...

    Market observations and actions

Singapore's Straits Times Index has cemented its leading position among stock indices. 12Feb2022 2 weeks ago when I observed that STI has become the number one performer gaining 3.93% year-to-date, Straits Times Index(STI) ended this week gaining 9.6% year-to-date. STI has further strengthened...

    Market observations and actions

China's stock market was closed last week. This morning Asian time, it opened in the morning up 2%. Interesting ... Highlight again last week was Straits Times Index. Straits Times Index continues to maintain its position as leader among major stock indices in 2022 year-to-date as of end of...

An even more terrible week for stock markets after last week's terrible week. 28Jan2022 As if last week was not bad enough for stock markets, this week was even worse. Notable observations from the table above; Singapore Straits Times Index(STI) is now the number one performer among the...

Global stock markets "celebrating" Chinese New Year in advance. Red Red Red. 21Jan2022 This is a terrible week for stock markets all over the world. It seems like they are "celebrating" Chinese New Year one week in advance. Red red red everywhere. Hong Kong was the only major market which...

    Market observations and actions

Time to tiptoe back into HK market Highlight this week was Hong Kong's stock market performance. Hang Seng Index(HSI) rose 3.79% this week. HSI has shown enough recovery that there is enough bullishness for traders to tip-toe back into the market. However, HSI is still below 200day moving...

    Market observations and actions

Thoughts on 2021's global markets movements Among Asian stock markets in 2021, India stock market was the best performer. The worst performer was Hong Kong. HK's 3 major indices were down at the bottom. What goes down a lot will be added fuel for the next rally. Hang Seng Index has been trading...

Simple sell rules to protect against disaster in financial markets

Sell rules alone do not form a complete trading system. One needs to have buy rules, sell rules plus position sizing for meaningful backtesting. If one were to backtest sell rules alone, it's not going to work. These rules were written more to protect the newbie investors/traders who tend to...
