German Bunds:120,000 DISTANT OTM call spreads have been bought

Since when is the ECB behind the bank debt? The Irish finance minister hinted on Friday that there might be haircuts on some Anglo-Irish sub debt. However, seems like it's not happening, according to the latest comments.

    calculating speed with Excel

d1 refers to the B-S d1, i.e: I really don't see why "speed" should be equal to d1. Isn't the expression for speed this: I might add that this is all in Wikipedia. Moreover, I don't really see why you'd need VBA to do all these, as they're relatively simple spreadsheet formulae.

Who are the idiots buying bonds for 1% interest?

tj, you truly know not what you speak of... Pls try to understand that trading is not just about being having a particular view/conviction. It's also about finding the way to express that view that offers the best risk/reward. The point I was trying to convey (and you didn't listen) was...

    What drives inflation?

Oh no... Joe Ross has moved on from offering random bits of trading wisdom to commenting on inflation. The end is nigh!

Who thought up of the plan to send our industrial base to communist china?

Well, just imagine for a second (not that I'm saying that it's necessarily always the case), that all these changes you're referring to are transitory, rather than permanent. Yesterday's empire wanes, then gets raped and pillaged by its erstwhile colony. Indeed, why not? It's happened before...

Relax, folks... If you take the really long view, it's just reversion to the mean :) (I am also a fan of Maddison).

    What deflation?

Wait a sec, I am a bit confused here... Surely, if I'm a fixed income investor, Fed's QE (printing of money) is the best thing that could possibly happen to me? Have you seen the returns on bond indices recently?

Existential currency choice for international travellers/workers

I don't know what to tell you, GoC... While I do worry about these things (along lines similar to what you have described), ultimately, you gotta "put your cock in the custard", if you'll forgive my choice of metaphor. Specifically, like many other people, I will most likely be domiciled in...

Existential currency choice for international travellers/workers

My solution is this... Given I'm gonna be f*cked whatever I do, I will be holding as diversified a portfolio as possible. I would also make some effort to forecast (to some limited extent, all the usual caveats apply) the distribution of my future costs across ccies.

    Butterflys.

In my experience, if you buy a cheap fly in an attempt to pin the strike, the mkt won't give you your money almost until expiry, even if you're right in the sweet spot. I like to buy cheap flies like lottery tix sometimes.

Well, Emperor Alexander II sold it in 1867 for $7.2MM, so it's probably worth at least as much :).
