Value and Activist hedge funds hurt by making concentrated bets

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=azobDABpF9ZU&refer=home May 9 (Bloomberg) -- When Jon Wood opened his Monaco-based hedge fund, the former UBS AG trader told investors he'd beat the market by buying stakes in no more than 40 companies -- the same way he made $2.4 billion...

This is the last move for Crude --shaping up just like the wheat trade!

Here's a study on the effects of crude oil spiking to $120. It was published in 2006. http://www.ms-ds.com/downloads/westcott_report.pdf "The more severe event envisioned in the scenario designed by safe for the World Economic Forum will likely cause a 25% decline in global stock market...

This is the last move for Crude --shaping up just like the wheat trade!

WallStWizzKid you bring up an interesting point. Crude Oil is a commodity that has a limited supply, much unlike equities like IPOs in 1999/2000. The supply there was virtually unlimited as more and more garbage was brought public and soaked up by the market like a dry sponge, until it didn't...

This is the last move for Crude --shaping up just like the wheat trade!

LOL says who? Wouldn't it be great if all stocks and markets would just trade exactly where we all feel they should trade at? Ah what a beautiful fantasy world it would be... we could all print money simply shorting whats overvalued and buying whats undervalued! Who needs technical analysis...

DCR down 25% today. This is getting ugly. When in trouble, double!

I think the takeaway is not that Robertson closed up Tiger and walked away with money in the bank. The takeaway is he got caught shorting an obvious bubble like a deer in the headlights and eventually got his head handed by the market. He capitulated on the exact peak of the tech market...

This is the last move for Crude --shaping up just like the wheat trade!

Julian Robertson comes to mind as they closed shop March 30, 2000 after being squeezed to death by short growth tech and long value bets: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0DE3D7123CF932A05750C0A9669C8B63 March 30... such irony.

Before you add to DCR I would get rid of that position entirely and replace it with USO $90 Oct puts, trading around $5.75 right now. Good luck.

    Fed wants to raise rates?

I didn't know the Fed was in charge of determining the supply and demand for commodities now. Interesting.

    Fed wants to raise rates?

Hoenig didn't say he disagreed with previous cuts. I think the takeaway is they plan to hike swiftly on signs that economic softness gives way to stabilization.

    Fed wants to raise rates?

If they follow through on this then it would represent a key (positive) difference to the last rate cut cycle where rates stayed low for too long, even as the economy was clearly recovering.

Citi selling $2bil in preferred, more common too?

The interesting part here (for me) is not simply the fact they're trying to raise capital but the ease of getting investors to pour billions upon billions into these financials. It seems many banks and brokers have investors lined up just waiting with billions of dollars to give away. Nuts.

Soros: U.S. stocks are in a bear-market rally

I wonder how Soros' "Long India + China Mainland/Short Europe + US" bet has been working out in the last couple weeks?

S2007S, fact is you come on the board every day with BRAND NEW 'SHORT OIL' TRADES and magically they all end up hugely profitable while crude marches higher. It almost seems you make more money the higher crude goes! I am sorry, I wonder if you're just playing us here. I love how you...
