    Wall Street and oil prices.

Speculators are necessary IMO in order to "test the waters" for new price levels. At some point - according to economic theory - demand will drop off, hurting speculators. This process goes both ways, i.e. when prices are declining speculators can drive them down much farther than normal market...

    Wall Street and oil prices.

Speculation cuts both ways. When prices go down they could eventually go down a lot faster and farther due to speculators being hurt, bailing out or shorting into a decline.

Kenneth Griffin, founder of Citadel Investment, bashes his hedge fund industry peers

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/13/business/sorkin.php?page=1 Kenneth Griffin, who runs one of the biggest and most successful hedge fund firms, has a blunt assessment: "We, as an industry, dropped the ball." The breakdown happened, Griffin contends, when big investment banks...

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

Not sure if you're aware of it, but US GDP was expanding rapidly 1970-1973 with unemployment dropping under 5%. Such conditions can spark unit labor costs to increase as labor becomes a rare commodity. Unlike commodity costs, labor cost increases tend to be 'sticky' and very hard to get out...

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

The only watershed event I foresee is the floods of tears of the gold bugs when they realize their gold stocks are tanking.

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

Wages increase when the economy is 'overheating' and labor is in high demand by employers. That's when unit labor costs can increase and start feeding on themselves, creating an adverse feedback cycle.

    Market is overbought

Do you have a stop on the TWM position? Although unlikely, one should never rule out the possibility of the market turning up and not looking back for a long while when shorting. You could be sitting on a losing position for years in the worst case. All this media mumbo jumbo 'the consumer is...

    CPI Data: Not affecting crude

Maybe it's just my subjective impression, but many of the recent inventory reports - regardless of the number - saw CL selling off $2-3 and then quickly bidding it back up into the green. Curious how it will be today.

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

Sure you believe in capitalism, just a couple of exceptions - Mom should stay at home while Dad is working and feeding the family. - China shouldn't be allowed to export to the US. - US companies should not be allowed to move manufacturing jobs offshore as they become economically...

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

So exporting low-qualification manufacturing jobs to China and replacing them with higher qualification jobs and service jobs domestically DOES NOT COUNT DOES IT???????????? I guess we should just abolish all common sense, too. The gold bugs scream about rampant inflation when unit labor...

    The Prelude to Double-Digit Inflation

So tell me, if the standard of living is eroding so rapidly, then what period labeled as a financial crisis like today WAS BETTER than 2008 for the average worker? During what period was the standard of living for the middle class the highest? 1981/82? 1990/91? Or 2008? When I read this BS...
