Not one killer application to move this market higher..

You sound bitter about this? Short are we?

    IV plummeting?

I was real proud of myself yesterday when I caught the pop at the end of the day buying in some of my short calls. I gave it all back today plus a couple of bucks when the stock went down to the level I made the trades, but IV came in.

Yes, and it drives me nuts. I just keep it closed for most of the day. I'm leaving so it doesn't matter.

    why all the ib bashing?

I use an Ati aiw 8500dv. That's interesting that it makes a difference. I should say that I've had problems on my laptop too. My desktop isn't a model of stability, I may get a new vid card anyways for other problems. I hesitate because my computer monitor is my only t.v. so I would have to...

    why all the ib bashing?

My main complaint is that their software is unstable as a lot of apps written in Java are. I can't keep the options window open for than a few minutes without it getting f***ed up. Of course, I can't just close it and open up a new one. I have to close the entire software. With the current...

starting as an options local on euronext

I think, generally, it is for large groups/firms now. Edge is virtually nonexistent. So what edge there is has to be put on for larger size, hence, higher capital requirements. Second, most locals aren't very sophisticated quatitatively or technologicaly. With tight edge, there isn't much...

Taking time off is a good idea. I took about nine months off and didn't trade with the odd exception for that period. I stated again about 6 weeks. It feels good and my mind is fairly sharp.

    Filters and IV Estimation

Here is the paper from where I got the idea. Note, it talks about mean reversion mostly, but thats not what I'm talking about(I did use mean reversion in my class project). I'm interest the jump process and incorporating that into my trading. Also, I could estimate the expected jump post...

    Filters and IV Estimation

This morning I saw a thread about filters which quickly turned into a flame of mathmatical methods used in finance. So I wanted to post my latest idea to solve a problem I have. This has to do with guessing where implied volatility will open the day after an earnings announcment or an event...

starting as an options local on euronext

How about by calling membership and talk to them? They probably could steer to a clearing firm if need be. Years ago I cleared Kas, but I think something happened to them. I know from our threads on this board it takes about 200k to join in the U.S. It maybe similar there.

    IB TWS check margin

I would be screwed if my position got liquidated every time I did this. I pushed my margin to the max regularly.

    my first trade

Is it good? Well, there are lot's of things to consider, but it looks like the right one to buy. Where was the stock when you bought it? Do you know the implied vol? My hunch is that this is probably what I would look at first. I'm bullish for the next couple of months, so I don't see much...

You couldn't have picked a worse stock to try and short today. That was up most of the day and I think only went negative for a tick or two around the time you bought the puts. That was my tell that we could rally at the end of the day. Why not stick to futures?

    Article on Rule Change

That's only if our order gets gets some sort of priority, but what if it just sits in the book while Ameritrade orders get routed to some other specialist and, while they have to match the best bid or ask, we don't get filled. I can see your point though, I may just be overreacting.

    Article on Rule Change

This looks like some bad news in this Barron's article. Normally I don't get to excited about these things, but my first impression is that this bad for small traders: : <blockquote> Under Pressure Is the heyday of specialists over? By KOPIN TAN ARE THE DAYS NUMBERED for the...

    spread with different months

I would probably just call it a diagonal combo. Another may be the diagonal-inverted-risk reversal.

Holy shit!!! I could see how that happens though and foresee how everything turns out in part 2. You can put on big positions, just not big risks. There is a difference. Use what you learn in your EE background and apply it to options to minize you exposure. That way when your wrong...

    Serious buying in chip sector

So, Murray the '+' in your post means that these are contrarian indicators? Just kidding. The decent earnings reports from the last month have made me somewhat bullish in this sector. Its not that tech doesn't rally during this time frame. It can and I have included a chart of the rally...

    Serious buying in chip sector

All the above plus last months TXN and Intel. I've been long the former and it has performed decently. There maybe life in the semi stocks over the next couple of months. Although, the summer is normally slow for tech stocks, so it may wait until fall.
