Freakonomics: "Stocks Surged [Plunged] Yesterday Because....Why?"

I think journalists are trying to create nice little logical sounding stories that can be easily digested by readers. "Ah it makes sense. It's logical. It sounds good". I guess it's human nature trying to make sense of everything.

Fed deploys government staff members on site at five biggest brokers

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120716296435884053.html?mod=googlenews_wsj WASHINGTON -- For the first time in more than a decade, the Federal Reserve has set up shop inside brokerages to monitor their financial condition, perhaps the beginning of an expanded role for the central bank and...

    Bottom was 17th march

I don't think we're anywhere close to a significant leg up without breaking through 1400 in the SP500. All this basing here is all good and well, but without breaking out of this range it's hard to get too optimistic here.

Muni Losses May Put Taxpayers on Hook for $7 Billion

Where are all the guys that were yelling at the Fed to keep their fingers out of the credit system to "stop wasting precious taxpayers money" because "the market will fix itself". http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=ay5nn_yu4ibs&refer=home On the evening of Jan. 22...

    The market is smoking crack

400k claims with 1990's population would equate to something like 500k today. 500k in 1990 would be 600k today.

George Soros: "Finanical Crisis Worse Since Great Depression; Markets Going Lower"

Long China and India, short Europe and US indexes. Wonder how he expects this to work in a global depression scenario. China and India equities (alongside other emerging markets) would likely be annihilated should exports implode overnight since unfortunately they do not yet have any domestic...

    GET THE HELL OUT

That's exactly the way I would interpret it at this juncture. Is this another 1974 (steep recession resulting in very high unemployment) or 1990 (shallow recession with lots of bank failures but stock market and unemployment weren't dragged down as badly)? It feels as if the market is weighing...

    GET THE HELL OUT

ByLo, I am not disagreeing with the economic trend being to the downside. There are many problems in the economy and profit estimates might be on the optimistic side. But all that doesn't mean there is a 100% guarantee markets will go down in a straight line from here.

Bernanke says Fed did not 'bail out' Bear Stearns

Between bailing out BSC and letting them file bankruptcy due to illiquidity the US taxpayer should be feeling grateful for Bernanke's actions as he saved them a lot of sleepless nights, at least for the time being.

I'm FULLY CONVINCED that the market has finally recovered

If you asked somebody in 1990/1991 in the middle of Gulf War I, inflation headlines, a steep housing recession and hundreds of banks failing "Where will growth in the 90s come from", would you not have gotten the same answer? I am not saying 2008-2018 will mirror 1990-2000, but IMO the...
