    Anyone know what happened..

I was surprised that the market was not stronger this morning, with Bush safe in the US after visiting Pakistan and with the announcement of the ATT/BellSouth deal. Bought ES last night but only booked a 1 point profit this morning. Seems like the market was heavy coming into Monday morning...

    Wash trades - legality?

The problem is "at the same time". If the sale and the buy are sufficiently distant in time, it should not be a problem. Whether that is a month, or a week, or a day, or an hour, etc., I don't know.

    Bloomberg Alternatives

As far as Bloomberg hardware goes, I like this: http://about.bloomberg.com/about/hardware/bunit.html (Until I left the buy side in 2001, I had access to a Bloomberg terminal, and I loved it. But, with the costs so high, I did not think that the expense was justified for an independent...

    Buying into a bankrupt Company

As slackeral said, read UAL's bankruptcy docs. I don't know the UAL details. Generically, a company will file a (series of) plan of reorganization. Eventually, after bankruptcy lawyers have feasted on the carcass, the judge approves the plan. If at that point the company has so little in...

    SIPC protection against fraud.

"Insurance" for investment fraud does not exist in the U.S. The Federal Trade Commission, Federal Bureau of Investigation, state securities regulators and other experts have estimated that investment fraud in the U.S. ranges from $10-$40 billion a year. In the case of microcap stock fraud, the...

    Barton Biggs' "Hedge Hogging"

I plan to read Hedgehogging at some point. It sounds like a good read. I was looking at the (4-star) reviews on Amazon, and found the review below. "ValueInvestor", the reviewer, is not very clear, but I think his point is that Biggs is well-connected. From amazon.com...

taxes - carrying a position into the new year

Yes. If you are trading stocks (and have not elected MTM status), your trade will not be taxable until you close the trade. If you close the trade in January, you might not owe tax until April, 2007. However, check to see if you need to pay estimated taxes earlier. If you are trading...
