    Structured Products

One of the big problems with these notes is that they expose the holder to the credit risk of the issuing institution. So, while they might be priced OK, in terms of the underlying (I could only take a brief glance at the first one, which looked fine), you have to realize that, ultimately...

    JS Global Macro Notes

A quote for a quote, then (not greatly relevant, but I am a fan)... There is timing in the whole life of the warrior, in his thriving and declining, in his harmony and discord. Similarly, there is timing in the Way of the merchant, in the rise and fall of capital. All things entail rising and...

China Supports Stable Euro, Strong EU Ties, Wen Says

It's not about weakening the USD... It's all about diversification for the Chinese (they don't seem to be too happy about QE2).

My experiences as a Hedge Fund Startup

I am not sure what sorts of institutional investors you might be referring to... In reality, there's all sorts and different groups behave quite differently. From what I know, apart from private investors (angel-like), the only other group that looks at startup funds is the FoF community...

Talk about money out of thin air...

Nah, it's not like that... It's not about the ability to "overdraft on reserves". That's not allowed for any bank that's part of the FRS (hence the discount window). The changes to the PSR policy apply to various interbank transactions that are cleared through the Fed's payment systems.

    backtesting FX options

I'm think that in BBG it's provider-specific. But, I have to say, whenever I tried to price far OTM FX options in BBG it's always somehow been spot on to what the mkt would quote me. Anyways, I was going to suggest. OP, if you want some one-off data, send me a PM and I might be able to...

    risk-free rate

Normally, as far as I am aware, people use the LIBOR curve to imply the risk-free rate, simply because it's the benchmark of sorts and is the most liquid. There are relatively easy, well-understood ways to construct these curves. However, there's a LOT of rather deep issues arnd the choice...

    backtesting FX options

By BBG I meant Bloomberg and it seems that it's what is being discussed in the thread you linked. I think they're talking specifically about using BBG API.

    backtesting FX options

All these things are available to people who trade the very liquid OTC FX options (you can find these things on BBG, for example). And I don't mean just ATM. You can also get the time series of the commonly used parameters that define skew (25 delta risk reversals & 25 delta butterflies). I...

Greeks rush through law giving tax amnesties to millions of taxpayers

Well, when Italy did something similar earlier this year, they recvd arnd €60bn in back taxes in one fell swoop. Moreover, given that the entities involved declare their assets, there's hope for less tax evasion going fwd.
