The statute of limitations on them coming after you is generally three years. But since you never even filed a return, they can go back as far as they want. Once the IRS says you owe something, the burden of proof is on you to show that you don't. All you need to do is schedule an appointment...

Definitely. The issue is that I piece together various modules from varying authors to come up with what you see now. The problem, as you can guess, it that each of these modules handle the new/unread concept differently. So unifying them all is basically a pain in the ass to be honest with you...
